WORLD SENIORS DAY – By Sandra Joseph

Source :  Qld Sri Lankan Newsletter – Dæhæna – August 2023

World Seniors Day is celebrated annually on 21 August.

It is an appreciation and an honouring of the contributions and achievements of older adults around the world. It is also a recognition of the importance of Seniors in society. Many charitable organisations depend heavily on the hours of voluntary work undertaken by Seniors. As the global community continues to age, it is critical to acknowledge the value and wisdom that older adults bring to the society. Seniors have a wealth of knowledge and experience that can be shared with younger generations.

World Seniors Day is a reminder that Seniors have a vital role to play in our communities and that their voices should be heard and respected.

World Seniors Day also raises awareness about the challengers Seniors face and the world can work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive society for Seniors. Many Seniors struggle with issues such as ageism, elder abuse, poverty, and inadequate healthcare.

One of the important goals of World Seniors Day is to promote active aging as Senior citizens are living longer. All societies in the world are in the midst of the longevity revolution. Engaging in activities such as exercise, volunteering and learning new skills can help Seniors maintain their independence, prevent chronic disease, and reduce social isolation. Seniors Clubs are places where people can meet and socialise around shared interests. There are free Cycling groups, Life Activities Clubs, Book Clubs, and Discussion Groups. Fun activities include gardening, bird watching, traditional games and puzzles, arts and crafts, animal interactions, dancing, parties and other social gatherings. Probus is an international organisation for retirees. Strength for Life is a strength training program for older people. University of the Third Age provides classes both educational and social.

Another important aspect of World Seniors Day aims to combat ageism by promoting intergenerational understanding and respect. It encourages people of all ages to recognise the value of seniors and to challenge stereotypes and negative attitudes towards aging. It raises awareness to prevent exclusion from job opportunities, social isolation, and limited access to health care. Elder abuse and poverty among Seniors are a global concern. It calls on governments and communities to ensure that older adults have access to affordable housing, social services, and financial security. It is an obligation.

In conclusion, World Seniors Day, is a day to honour and appreciate the contribution of older adults and give them a voice about the challenges they face. It promotes active aging, address issues of concern and advocates for better social support for Seniors. By recognizing the value and rights of older adults we can create a more inclusive and age friendly society for everyone.
