Sri Lankan Muslim Association of Queensland (SLMAQ)
The Sri Lankan Muslim Community in Brisbane is pleased to inform the launch of a formal association to represent the interests and welfare of the community. The entity – the Sri Lankan Muslim Association of Queensland (SLMAQ) – has been incorporated with the Queensland Office of Fair Trade.
The SLMAQ inauguration ceremony was held on 21st July 2024 at the Australian International Islamic College in Durack. In attendance were over 100 families and a further 30 students studying at various colleges and universities around Queensland.
Muslims of Sri Lankan heritage have been residing in Queensland for over half a century. Majority of the community is concentrated around the Brisbane and Gold Coast regions, with some families also residing in regional centres of Rockhampton, Toowoomba and Townsville.
SLMAQ provides for the welfare of Sri Lankan Muslims in Queensland, and our objectives are to:
- organise, facilitate and support the religious, cultural, social, educational and professional needs of the members
- support and facilitate community projects in Queensland and in Sri Lanka
- represent our community at federal, state and local levels, and among the diplomatic community
- establish and maintain relationships with other Sri Lankan affiliated associations
- make representations on behalf of Sri Lankan Muslims in Queensland.
We look forward to partnering and collaborating with all Sri Lankan affiliated Associations in Queensland and Australia, and to furthering the interests and welfare of all Sri Lankans.
