Left-leaning politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake has won Sri Lanka’s presidential election after a historic second round of counting. No candidate won more than 50% of the total votes in the first round, where Dissanayake got 42.31% while his closest rival, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, got 32.76%. But Dissanayake, who promised voters good governance and tough anti-corruption measures, emerged as winner after the second count, which tallied voters’ second and third choice candidates.

US envoy congratulates AKD

In a post on X, US Ambassador Julie Chung congratulated President-elect Anura Kumara Dissanayake on his victory in Sri Lanka’s Presidential election. She also praised the Sri Lankan people for peacefully exercising their democratic rights. Ambassador Chung reaffirmed the strength of the bilateral relationship, stating, “We value the strong US-Sri Lanka partnership and stand ready to work together on shared priorities.” Her message emphasised the continued commitment to collaboration between the two countries.

FTA agreement with China, an urgent need– Former Envoy to China, Dr. Palitha Kohona

Irrespective of which Government is in power Sri Lanka must continue negotiations and sign the Free Trade Agreement with China urgently, said the former Ambassador to China, Dr. Palitha Kohona. Most of the ground work for this has been done. “However, Sri Lanka must negotiate this FTA with care and try to gain more concessions during exports. One must also remember that China has a huge export market and negotiators should look at this as well.”

Many countries which have concluded bilateral Free Trade Agreements with China have done ‘marvelously’ in accessing the Chinese market.

No Car Sundays in Colombo

Colombo City is the latest city in the world to introduce car-free Sunday under which selected roads in the city will be closed for traffic. However, these roads will not be deserted as they will come alive with a host of activities such as Music, a street market, yoga and exercising people.

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) is partnering with The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka to pilot Colombo’s first ever car-free day.

Recipes From Roma’s Kitchen

Tangy Crab Salad Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 8oz (250g) Japanese or baby cucumbers
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (150g) cooked or canned crabmeat
  • 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 4 fresh tofu buns or poppy seed bread or all grain bread rolls
  • 1 teaspoon finely sliced Thai basil leaves,  to serve.

CHILLI DRESSING

  • to 2 tablespoons minced red finger- length chilli
  •  cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 shallots or 1 small onion, minced
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons fish sauce

  METHOD

1.Make the Chilli Dressing by combining all the ingredients   in a saucepan and simmer over high heat for about 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has thickened. Remove and set aside to cool.

2.Peel the cucumbers, then slice very thinly. If using larger cucumbers, cut in half lengthwise first, scrape out the seeds with a spoon before slicing the cucumbers. Rub the salt into the cucumber slices and mix well, then strain or squeeze the cucumber to remove the liquid. Add all but 1 Tablespoon of the chilli dressing, crabmeat, lemon or lime juice and pepper to the cucumber slices and toss to combine.

3.Make a slit in the Bread Rolls and stuff each roll with the  cocumber crab mixture, then top with reserved Chilli Dressing and Basil leaves when served.

NOTE: Japanese cucumbers are very small and crunchy, and almost seedless. Baby cucumbers.
