Newly Elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne: Vision for a Greener, Safer, and Prosperous City – By Nick Reece

Newly Elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne: Vision for a Greener, Safer, and Prosperous City - By Nick Reece

It is truly the honour of my life to be elected as Lord Mayor of Melbourne.

I will work hard every day to make our neighbourhoods greener, our streets cleaner and our city safer and more prosperous.

Melbourne is the best and fairest city in the world – and I can’t wait to work with the new Councillor group to make it even better.

I believe Melbourne’s best days are ahead of us.

182 years ago, the City of Melbourne’s first meeting was held in a location far less grand than this.

In 1842, the first meeting of Council was held at the Royal Hotel.  A small pub on the corner of Collins and Queen streets.

Back then, Melbourne had no public buildings so the pubs served as both polling booths and community halls for civic meetings.

The first council meeting was a huge moment for the hitherto renegade township on the banks of the Yarra. Even in those early days, Melbourne was a city of ambition. A city of possibility.

In modern Melbourne people are dreaming bigger than ever.

That’s no surprise, because our people are young – with a median age of just 30.

We are a city of extraordinary diversity – your neighbours come from 160 cultural backgrounds, speak 150 languages and practice 80 faiths. Fifty-five per cent of people living in the City of Melbourne were born overseas.

This makes Melbourne one of the youngest and most multicultural cities in the world.

Melbourne has had a few knocks in recent times. But we are a city that does recoveries better than any city in the world…  we don’t just bounce back, we bounce forward.

As Australia’s biggest and fastest-growing city, the next four years are going to be a time of great opportunities and possibilities.

Together with my fellow councillors, we will work hard every day to make Melbourne better and fairer for everyone
