The Koha Calls ( An Avurudha poem ) – by Charmaine Candappa

The Koha Calls ( An Avurudha poem)
The Koha’s call brings in the spirit of Aluth Auruthu
As the yellow Erabaddu blooms in the April sun.
It’s the New Year of two cultures
It’s a time of feasting and fun.
The shops are full of colorful clothing
There is brisk buying for things everywhere.
Sweet meats sizzle in country kitchens
Kokis, Kavun, and Athiraha.
The Koha’s call brings in the spirit of Aluth Auruthu
And drums reverberate in the joyous air
Hearths are lit and the milk boils over.
As the sound of crackers gets louder and louder.
Sheaves of betel leaves are ready for those to pay obeisance.
Swings for the young ones for frolic and fun.
The time is here to celebrate Aluth Aurudha
As both cultures represent one.
Charmaine Candappa.
