People all around the world come together on April 22 to celebrate and promote ongoing efforts toward climate action and the care of our environment every day.
Kandy, Sri Lanka — April 22, 2026. Earth Day this year feels more meaningful and urgent than ever. Around the world, communities come together not just to celebrate the beauty of our planet but also to face the pressing environmental issues that touch our daily lives — like rising temperatures, unpredictable monsoon seasons, shrinking forests, and polluted waterways.
Nonetheless, amid these warnings, Earth Day 2026 also highlights resilience, innovation, and the quiet strength of ordinary individuals committed to caring for the shared environment.
A Global Movement Inspired by Local Action
Around the world, Earth Day celebrations are taking place in schools, churches, parks, and coastal towns. In Sri Lanka, passionate environmental groups are leading efforts such as river cleanups along the Mahaweli River, planting trees in the Central Province, and hosting workshops focused on reducing plastic waste — a growing problem affecting communities everywhere.
Scientists highlight that although major policy changes are crucial, the combined impact of local efforts is truly meaningful. Every tree planted, every kilogram of waste diverted, and each household embracing sustainable habits play a part in fostering a bigger cultural shift. It’s about balancing development with the goal of long-term ecological health.
The Planet’s Future Is Still Writable
Earth Day 2026 reminds us of a hopeful truth: our planet’s story is still being written. We, as humanity, have the power to shape it. The decisions we make today—whether at home, in our cities, or in government—will influence the world our children and grandchildren will inherit.
This Earth Day serves as both a gentle reminder and a warm invitation to appreciate and protect our planet.
Let’s cherish and safeguard what we have left, lovingly mend what has been broken, and dream big about the endless possibilities ahead.

It’s wonderful to remember that the event is also part of the Strong Earth Festival on April 29th, coinciding with Earth Day + 7. This celebration highlights the incredible contributions of the late Maurice Strong, who played a vital role in protecting our planet.
His inspiring efforts include organising the Earth Summits in Stockholm in 1972 and Rio in 1992, which led to important Conventions on Climate Change, Biodiversity, and the SDGs. Additionally, he launched the Earth Charter in 2000 alongside Mikhael Gorbachev, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
At the OAK RAY REGENCY Hotel in Getambe, Kandy, the staff warmly dedicate ‘Earth Day’ to caring for our environment. They celebrate by working to protect our air, water, trees, and overall surroundings, making them healthier and cleaner. For us, as people of faith, this day holds even deeper meaning—it’s a gentle reminder that the earth is a trust placed in our care. We are proud to be the first in Kandy to kick off this meaningful project on such a special day.
It’s a moral duty — Loving our neighbour means protecting the air, water, and soil we depend on.
