LEGENDS OF SRI LANKAN CRICKET-D D JAYASINHA

LEGENDS OF SRI LANKAN CRICKET-D D JAYASINHA

Do you remember him?

.Douglas Dias Jayasinha remains one of the forgotten pioneers of Sri Lankan cricket. Long before Sri Lanka earned Test status or international fame, he was among the talented cricketers who laid the foundation for the country’s rich cricketing tradition through skill, discipline, and leadership.

Born in Galle on 11 May 1915, Douglas Dias Jayasinha received his education at Mahinda College, where his cricketing talent quickly became evident. A stylish left-handed batsman, a dependable bowler, and an outstanding slip fielder, he developed into one of the finest schoolboy cricketers of his era. His leadership qualities also shone through when he captained the Mahinda College first XI from 1934 to 1936, guiding the team with confidence and determination.

In 1937, Jayasinha achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first schoolboy cricketer from Sri Lanka’s Southern Province to represent Ceylon at international level. He made his debut against New Zealand in October that year under the captaincy of S. Saravanamuttu. At a time when opportunities to play international cricket were extremely limited, earning a place in the national side was considered one of the highest honours a cricketer could receive. His selection was not only a personal achievement but also a proud moment for the Southern Province, inspiring countless young cricketers who followed in his footsteps.

Jayasinha later represented Ceylon against India in 1945, further establishing himself as one of the country’s respected cricketers. Although his playing career came before the era of official Test cricket, his performances reflected the high standard of Ceylonese cricket during those formative years.

His contribution to the game did not end after retirement. From 1961 to 1973, he served as a national selector, spending the final ten years as Chairman of the Selection Committee. During this important period, he played a significant role in identifying and nurturing talented cricketers who would shape the future of Sri Lankan cricket. His experience, fairness, and deep understanding of the game earned him the respect of players and administrators alike.

Douglas Dias Jayasinha passed away on 29 April 2006 at the age of 90, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. Though his name may not be as widely remembered today, he remains one of the pioneering figures who helped build the strong foundations of Sri Lankan cricket. His achievements continue to be a source of pride for Mahinda College, the Southern Province, and the history of cricket in Sri Lanka.
