Dr. Ravi A. Fernando’s career represents a compelling example of how international business experience can be transformed into purposeful, sustainability-focused leadership. From senior executive positions with major multinational companies across Africa, the Middle East and Asia, to pioneering roles in nanotechnology, strategic innovation, climate action and board governance, his professional journey has reflected the changing responsibilities of business leaders in an increasingly complex world.

His story, highlighted by The Day News Global in its Day 100 Series, Day 15, is particularly significant for Sri Lankans worldwide because it demonstrates how knowledge acquired across international markets can be directed towards strengthening responsible business, scientific innovation and long-term social progress.

A strong academic foundation

Dr. Fernando’s professional outlook has been supported by an extensive academic and executive education background. He holds an MBA from the University of Colombo, a qualification that provided a firm foundation in management, strategy and organisational leadership.

His interest in the relationship between business and sustainability was subsequently deepened through the Master of Studies in Sustainability Leadership at the University of Cambridge. This specialised study placed greater emphasis on the environmental, social and institutional challenges that modern organisations must address if they are to remain resilient and relevant.

He also completed a Doctor of Business Administration from the European Business School, where his research interests included the influence of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on businesses in different countries. In addition, he undertook the Advanced Management Program at INSEAD Business School in France, one of the world’s prominent institutions for executive education.

Since 2010, Dr. Fernando has served as an Executive in Residence at INSEAD, contributing to discussions surrounding leadership, strategic management and sustainable business. This combination of academic study and practical international experience has enabled him to approach sustainability not as a peripheral corporate activity, but as an essential element of strategy and governance.

A multinational career across three regions

Between 1981 and 2007, Dr. Fernando held senior positions with leading multinational companies, including Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser and SmithKline Beecham International. His responsibilities extended across Africa, the Middle East and Asia, giving him direct exposure to different markets, cultures, consumer environments and leadership models.

Such an extensive international career provided a practical education in how organisations operate across geographical boundaries, while also illustrating the importance of adapting corporate strategies to local conditions. The experience acquired during these years would later become instrumental in his work on sustainability, technology and responsible governance.

The multinational sector also exposed Dr. Fernando to the rapid transformation of industries, from consumer goods and pharmaceuticals to communications and emerging technologies. Through these experiences, the importance of leadership in converting knowledge and innovation into measurable outcomes became increasingly apparent.

Rather than treating commercial success and social responsibility as opposing objectives, his later work has emphasised the possibility of creating organisations that are both economically viable and responsive to environmental and societal challenges.

Pioneering innovation through SLINTEC

In 2008, Dr. Fernando became the first Chief Executive Officer of the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology, or SLINTEC, serving in that role until 2011. His appointment placed him at the forefront of an important chapter in Sri Lanka’s scientific and technological development.

Nanotechnology, which operates at an exceptionally small scale to create new materials and applications, has potential across fields including advanced manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, energy and environmental protection. Establishing and developing an institution dedicated to this discipline required more than technical knowledge; it also demanded strategic planning, commercial awareness, institutional coordination and an ability to communicate innovation to wider audiences.

As SLINTEC’s first CEO, Dr. Fernando helped guide the organisation during its formative years, linking scientific research with the broader objective of commercialising innovation. His transition from multinational business leadership to a national technology institution demonstrated how private-sector experience could be applied to a knowledge-based development agenda.

Extending strategic thinking through the Blue Ocean approach

From 2011 to 2016, Dr. Fernando served as Operations Director of the Malaysia Blue Ocean Strategy Institute. The Blue Ocean approach is associated with the creation of new markets and opportunities rather than competing solely within crowded, established sectors.

This role complemented his earlier work in multinational business and nanotechnology, while further strengthening his understanding of innovation-led growth. It also reinforced the importance of identifying opportunities that can produce shared value, particularly when institutions are prepared to challenge conventional assumptions and develop new forms of collaboration.

For Sri Lankan entrepreneurs, professionals and organisations operating internationally, this aspect of Dr. Fernando’s career offers a constructive lesson: innovation is not limited to technology alone, but can also involve new partnerships, new service models, new approaches to community development and more efficient ways of addressing long-standing challenges.

Building a sustainability network in Sri Lanka

Dr. Fernando’s contribution to responsible business became more prominent in 2007, when he became Sri Lanka’s first UN Global Compact Focal Point. He also played a leading role in establishing the UN Global Compact Network Sri Lanka, creating a platform through which businesses and institutions could engage with internationally recognised principles relating to responsible corporate conduct.

The network’s work has included attention to climate action, ethical business practices and the role of companies in advancing sustainable development. Dr. Fernando has continued to contribute to this field, including through efforts connected with the network’s Climate Emergency Task Force.

His sustainability philosophy has been presented through two major books: Strategic Corporate Sustainability: 7 Imperatives for Sustainable Business, published in 2015, and 21st Century Leadership to Fight the Code Red for Business, published in 2023.

Together, these works examine the need for organisations to move beyond short-term financial measures and consider the wider consequences of corporate decisions. Climate change, technological disruption, social pressures and governance expectations are no longer distant concerns; they increasingly influence the stability, reputation and future direction of businesses.

Guiding organisations through Global Strategic Corporate Sustainability

Dr. Fernando is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Global Strategic Corporate Sustainability (Pvt) Ltd, which operates in Luxembourg and Sri Lanka. Through this organisation, he provides strategic guidance relating to corporate sustainability, climate responsibility, leadership and governance.

His work reflects a broader shift in the role of the business leader. Traditionally, executive performance was often assessed primarily through revenue, market share and profitability. While these indicators remain important, organisations are now also expected to demonstrate how they manage environmental impacts, support communities, prepare for long-term risks and maintain accountable governance structures.

A sustainable organisation must therefore be capable of looking beyond the next quarter or financial year. It must consider how decisions made today will affect employees, customers, local communities, natural resources and future generations. Dr. Fernando’s work has consistently promoted this longer-term perspective.

Board governance and corporate stewardship

Dr. Fernando has also contributed his experience through board roles with several prominent organisations, including Dilmah Tea, Aitken Spence Plantations, the UN Global Compact, LOLC Holdings, Ceylon Graphene Technologies and Ceylon Asset Management.

Board members carry significant responsibility because they help shape organisational direction, oversee risk and encourage accountability. In the current business environment, effective governance requires awareness of financial performance as well as climate-related exposure, technological change, workforce expectations and the social consequences of corporate activity.

His involvement with organisations spanning tea, plantations, finance, asset management, advanced materials and international sustainability networks illustrates the versatility of his expertise. It also demonstrates how sustainability principles can be applied across very different sectors, each of which faces its own operational realities and opportunities for improvement.

Recognition for strategic leadership

In 2007, Dr. Fernando received the Global Strategy Leadership Award, presented by Professor Renée Mauborgne of INSEAD at the World Strategy Summit. The recognition acknowledged his contribution to strategic leadership and reflected the international value of his work.

His professional achievements have been shaped not by a single position or industry, but by an evolving commitment to learning, innovation and responsible decision-making. The progression from multinational executive to technology institution leader, international strategy specialist, sustainability adviser and board member has created a distinctive body of work.

A role model for Sri Lankans worldwide

Dr. Ravi A. Fernando’s career offers an encouraging example of how a Sri Lankan professional can build international credibility while continuing to contribute to the country’s institutional, scientific and business development. His journey also illustrates that leadership is not a static achievement; it is a continuing process of reassessing priorities as the world changes.

The emerging generation of Sri Lankan professionals and entrepreneurs can draw valuable lessons from his example, particularly the importance of combining commercial discipline with scientific awareness, continuous education and social responsibility. His work suggests that businesses can become part of the solution to major challenges when their leaders are prepared to think beyond immediate results.

For the global Sri Lankan community, stories such as this are important because they celebrate achievement while also presenting a practical vision of progress. Through its news and articles, business directory and regular eLanka newsletter, eLanka continues to share stories that connect Sri Lankan people, businesses and institutions across Australia and around the world.

Dr. Fernando’s journey stands as a positive reminder that business leadership can evolve into a broader form of stewardship, in which innovation, sustainability and long-term community wellbeing are placed at the centre of organisational success.
