Mohamed Nazeer

The artist behind the upcoming art exhibition ‘Kaleidoscope’ critiques the delicate brush strokes on his abstract take on the Vesmuhunu (Sri Lankan cultural mask). He draws a deep breath before giving it a tick of approval.

Mohamed Nazeer is a self-taught artist focusing on acrylic paintings and pastel drawings. Although a mechanical engineer by profession, Mohamed was commissioned to paint various portraits and large scale oil paintings for affluent businessman during his tenure in the Middle East. Mohamed has lived in Melbourne for over 20 years and now runs his own framing and custom art business from Mount Waverley.

A gifted cricketer in his own right, he captained the Jaffna Central College cricket team and played for Middlesex University. Cricket has therefore naturally influenced many of his artworks over the years – one of his most treasured pieces being an abstract painting inspired by Sangakkara’s iconic cover drive. Mohamed’s caricatures of local players and cricketing legends also proved to be immensely popular during his school days.

A myriad of vibrant hues and striking lines are common in Mohamed’s recent acrylic works – this penchant for the abstract style was influenced by Senaka Senanayake. Fauna, rugged landscapes and cultural icons such as Flinders Station and a trishaw rank are recurring themes in his artwork.

“Kaleidoscope” is Mohamed’s first solo exhibition. It will run from March 14-25 at The Highway Gallery, 14, The Highway, Mt.Waverley (open daily from 12-4 pm, except Mondays & Tuesdays). For more details and photos of Mohamed’s artwork, please visit:
