Sri Lanka Kidney Foundation in the UK – Dinner Dance with Desmond De Silva

Photos from the fund raising event in British Midlands UK on 9th February 2019.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has become a serious health issue in Sri Lanka with the Government unable to cope with the treatment & management of the disease. The World Health Organisation has indicated that CKD has affected over 15% of rural Sri Lanka. This number is ever increasing with extremely limited access to medical attention, medication and or equipment necessary to treat and manage the disease.

There is a desperate need to create awareness of the suffering of CKD patients. Basic needs such as transport and sundry expenses in relation to attending hospital or clinics and the need to have dialysis kits, injections and other medication made freely available to sufferers of the disease.

In the picturesque village of Nottingham in the British Midlands a hardworking team of young professionals has formed Sri Lanka Kidney Foundation to raise funds to support the medical needs of CKD sufferers. Their aim is to be self sufficient in 5 years.

On 9th February this year, Desmond De Silva was invited to entertain guests at the Fund Raising Event in Nottingham. He was joined on stage by popular young Sri Lankan singer Mihindu Ariyaratne and backed by EXCEED who is the most popular Sri Lankan band in the UK. Veteran Actress Dr Malini Fonseka graced the event as Guest of Honour.

The event was SOLD OUT as 570 guests danced the night away to the excellent entertainment provided by Desmond & Mihindu.

Desmond’s brand of entertainment had everyone wanting more. The spacious dance floor had to be extended as 95% of the guests were on the dance floor dancing and singing to his music.

Desmond invited Mihindu to perform a duet with him (Waada Baila) originally sung with Paul Fernando that won resounding applause from the revellers.

Mihindu is an entertainer with a distinctive quality to his voice and a natural ability to engage with the audience. He is undoubtedly a rising star!

It was a great evening of entertainment and a resounding success for the hardworking Foundation committee members. Dr Malini Fonseka addressed the event and highlighted the good work carried out by the Foundation and how the money raised was making a difference to the lives of CKD sufferers.

A grand total of 12,401 GBP (Pounds Sterling) was raised that night and will go towards providing medical equipment, treatment and support for CKD sufferers. Funds will also be provided to raise awareness in Sri Lanka of the disease and awarding sponsorships to Children affected directly or indirectly by the disease.
