Age honestly has nothing to do with leading, and taking on leadership roles. Sadly, many organisation dismiss great leadership talent as ‘too immature’ to be a leader : assuming that maturity comes with age ! Being young : and having youthful vigour can be a huge plus to leadership : as is tempered wisdom of age. The KEY is to bring the two together : and enable a mutual respect and appreciation for different ‘forms’ of leadership : all of which add value to the organisation, the task, and the team…
Never be scared to give a ‘young buck’ an opportunity to lead. As a ‘Senior’ rather than taking offence in it : become the mentor and coach that will enable the ‘newbie’ make a success of his/her first leadership role !
Case in point : The Argentinian coach was one of the youngest in this World Cup : but managed to guide his team to an epic victory… France’s Coach was one of the oldest. BOTH coaches are fantastic in their own right : and have many great qualities about them : and AGE is not a common denominator !
