EDELWEISS – by Desmond (Kelly from Colombo)

Everyone who knows anything about music, knows the the above “song” from Oscar Hammerstein’s beautiful film, “The Sound of Music”.

Everyone should also know that “Edelweiss” is actually a little white mountain flower that grows mainly on the rocky ridges of mountains at, and around the apex of these tors.
So “Edelweiss” can be categorised  simply as a tiny “wild mountain flower”.

I have had this “idea” of my own version of another beautiful film from way back, entitled “Romeo & Juliet”
the BEST version of which, in my opinion, was the 1936 version, Starring the very beautiful Norma Shearer as Juliet & Leslie Howard as Romeo.

My “Romeo & Juliet” (in case anyone who reads the “texts”  of eLanka is interested) will have to be an “Alpine-version” of this beautiful, but touching story.
The names of the “actors involved” will have to be changed, of course & I have decided that the new title of what could be a great “filmette”, if you like, could be
“AN ALPINE AFFAIR”. It will be, of course, a love-story, and I have the “SONG & THE MUSIC” which will be featured throughout the film, just as “Lara’s Theme” was featured in “Dr.Zivago”.

I also have this new film’s “story” in mind & will discuss it with anyone genuinely interested in the project. My idea is that, with all the “trouble & strife” going on this World of ours at the moment. “A LOVE STORY” set primarily in a glorious alpine setting, will be something new, something to look forward to, on our Theatre & /or Television Screens.

Because, naturally, I cannot exaggerate on this idea of mine right here, I am going to pen-in the lyrics of the “song” I have in mind, for the film .This way, all the
READERS OF E-LANKA will undoubtedly understand exactly what I have in mind as regards this new film.

“AN ALPINE AFFAIR”

IN AN ALPINE VILLAGE FAIR
DWELT A MAID OF BEAUTY, RARE
GOLDEN TRESSES, EYES OF BLUE
AND THEY WERE, OF DEEPEST HUE
MANY LOVERS, BOLD, HAD SHE
WOOING HER, ON BENDED KNEE
BUT SHE ANSWERED EVERY SWAIN
IN A COOL,LIGHT-HEARTED STRAIN

“OH, NO, NO,” SHE CRIED
“I’LL NOT WED WITH THEE,
BUT I’LL KEEP MY HEART,
STILL, AND FANCY-FREE
WHAT CARE I, FOR WORDS
MEANINGLESS, TO ME
THE FLOWERS & THE BIRDS
SHALL MY LOVERS BE”

BUT BENEATH THOSE SILENT STARS
ONE, AT LAST, HER SOUL UNBARS
SHE HAD LOVED HIM, LONG AGO
THOUGH HER LIPS HAD OFT SAID “NO”
YET, SHE LOVED HIM, AND ONCE MORE
SHE WOULD TRY HIM, AS OF YORE
GIVE HIS LOVE ONE FINAL TEST
ERE SHE ANSWERED HIS REQUEST

“IF THY LOVE BE TRUE,
THERE, ON FIELDS OF ICE
WHEN THE SPRING IS NEW
GROWS SWEET EDELWEISS
BRING, BUT ONE DEAR FLOWER
THY REWARD SHALL BE
BOTH MY HEART AND HAND
ALONE, FOR THEE”

FROM THE CRUEL HEIGHTS ABOVE
DYING DAY, HAD BROUGHT HER LOVE
IN HIS HAND, SWEET EDELWEISS
BUT HIS LIFE WAS SACRIFICED
“TAKE THIS FLOWER”, HE GENTLY SAID
ERE HIS DYING SPIRIT FLED
“KEEP IT LOVE, IN MEMORY
OF THE MAN WHO DIED FOR THEE”

“OH, NO, NO”, SHE CRIED
THOU WAS’T SLAIN FOR ME
WOULD THAT I HAD DIED
IN THY STEAD, FOR THEE
OH, MY BREAKING HEART
SOON, SHALL BE AT REST
NEVER MORE TO PART
FROM THE ONE THAT I  LOVED BEST”.

The “lyrics” tell the story, the music is unforgettable
the “film”(if made) could be a box-office “hit”.

Forget “terrorism”, “wars”, “road-carnage”, & all the other terrible “bad-news” stories. eLanka has given me the chance to express my views,

Hope you agree with me.

Desmond (Kelly from Colombo).
