Raja Saba Padura
directed by the President of SLAASC Niroshan Kahawatte in North Hollywood, Ca.
Was a great success!
Raja Saba Padura, directed by the President of SLAASC Niroshan Kahawatte, was a grand production that showcased the contribution of a group of talented exponents of our traditional stage plays. Led by Indu Wickremesooriya and Sucharita Rodrigo, the production’s storyline revolved around the ancient legendary Royal Court Performances featuring the best drummers, singers, and dancers in the Kingdom.
The SLAASC production’s unique elements, such as the fusion of music, dance, costumes, creative backgrounds, and the innovative use of modern technology, not only make us contemplate how our cultural heritage relates to contemporary society and the Sri Lankan community in Southern California and elsewhere but also leave the audience intrigued and fascinated.est drummers, singers, and dancers in the Kingdom.
The Court Performances of Sri Lanka are among the oldest performances with an unbroken history. Legend traces their beginnings to pre-Buddhist times. The Mahavamsa is rich with descriptions of song and dance in Lanka’s royal courts. However remote their origins, it is clear that the historical theatres are waning away while the new theatre is flowering.
And it is no different among the expatriate community. In that light, SLAASC’s elaborate production directed by Niroshan must be seen as an attempt to keep the ancient traditions alive in the minds of the expatriate community, particularly its younger generation, who play a crucial role in preserving our cultural heritage
The fusion of music, dance, costumes, creative backgrounds, the use of modern technology, and outstanding performances made the production informative and mesmerizing, which helped retain the audience’s attention for several hours and helped the contemporary generation learn a great deal.

Recipes From Roma’s Kitchen
CHILLI CRABS
INGREDIENTS
2 Cooked crabs, about 1/2 lbs
1/2″ cube shrimp paste
2 cloves garlic
2 fresh red chillies, seeded or
1 teaspoon chopped chili from a jar
1/2 ” fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced
4 tablespoons sunflower oil
1 1/4 cups tomato ketchup
1 Tablespoon dark brown sugar
1/2 cup warm water
4 scallions, chopped to garnish cucumber
chunks and hot toast, to serve (optional)
Method
1.Remove the claws of one crab and turn it onto
its back with the head facing away from you. Use
use your thumbs to push the body up from the main
shell. Discard the stomach sac and “dead men’s fingers,”
i.e. lungs and any green matter. Leave the creamy brown
meat in the shell and cut the shell in half with a cleaver or
very sharp knife. Cut the body section in half and crack the
claws with a hard blow from a hammer or cleaver. Avoid
splintering the claws. Repeat with the other crab.
2.Grind the shrimp paste, garlic, chillies and ginger to a paste with a pestle and mortar.* (I have an extra coffee grinder that is great for these small jobs)
3. Heat a wok and add the oil. fry the spice paste, stirring
constantly, without browning.
Stir in the tomato ketchup, sugar and water and mix the sauce well. When just boiling, add all the crab pieces and toss in the sauce until well coated and hot. Serve in a large bowl, sprinkle with the spring onions. Place in the center of the table for everyone to help themselves. Accompany this finger-licking dish with cool cucumber chunks and hot toast for mopping up the sauce, if you like.
