Sri Lankan Bodybuilding Champion Lucion Pushparaj was born in Ja Ela in Sri Lanka. Only 40 years old and already a champion in his field. He has won many body building titles in Sri Lanka and the U.S. He is in training in Los Angeles and will be competing at the World Championships in Ohio in 2023. We will keep our readers posted to keep an eye out for this competition and to cheer him along while as a Sri Lankan, he will make Sri Lanka proud. He is the first Sri Lankan to make it this far in this field. “Such a nice man!”

New RORO Business to Hambantota International Port in 2023

HIP’s “Roll-on, Roll-off” (RORO) numbers, which are expected to increase rapidly this year, were endorsed by NYK vessel MV HERMES LEADER, which arrived at the port this week, with new volumes. A total of 1,156 units which came from India will be transshipped to South Africa, Jordan, Sudan and Tanzania. Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) has been growing the RORO business gradually in the past 5 years by aggressively marketing its services and regular overseas visits to the shipping line principles to promote the port, “says Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) COO Tissa Wickramasinghe.

Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC commenced work for 2023 on 2 January, under the patronage of Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe. Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe addressed his staff with words of encouragement, laying out the guidelines of what needs to be achieved for the year 2023 by the Embassy. The Ambassador reiterated the message that President Ranil Wickremesinghe delivered to the nation, to mark the new year. He echoed the President’s sentiment that Sri Lankans should all join hands in working for the recovery of the nation.

The January-December 2022 cumulative average Ceylon Tea price of Rs. 1,234.24 (USD 3.83) shows a significant increase of Rs. 618.80 vis-à-vis Rs. 615.44 (USD 3.13) for the period January-December 2021, thus establishing the highest-ever average for a calendar year in Rupees. In USD terms the average of USD 4.11 recorded in 2017 remains the highest. High Growns for the period January-December 2022 which obtained Rs. 1,093.10 (USD 3.40) show an increase of Rs. 505.97 vis-à-vis Rs. 587.13 (USD 2.98) during January-December 2021, according to Forbes & Walker Research.

Obituaries – Sad News

Paul MasonPaul Mason (92) passed away on December 26th, 2022 in North Hills, Ca. He was the President of Viacom Pictures and was a Producer of many Hollywood movies including “A Common Man” made in Sri Lanka. Paul was instrumental

in bringing many movies to Sri Lanka as a location. Survivors include his wife, Kyong, and sons Barry and Stuart.

Pope Benedict XVI, (95) pope emeritus, a quiet scholar of diamond-hard intellect who spent much of his life enforcing church doctrine and defending tradition before shocking the Roman Catholic world by becoming the first pope in six centuries to resign. died on December 31st, 2022. Benedict’s death was announced by the Vatican.

Recipes From Roma’s Kitchen

Stir-fried shrimp with Tamarind

Stir-fried shrimp with Tamarind

Ingredients

2 Tablespoons tamarind Paste

2/3 cup boiling water

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 tablespoons chopped onion

2 tablespoons palm sugar

2 tablespoons chicken stock or water

1 tablespoon fish sauce

6 dried red chillies, fried

1 pound uncooked shelled shrimp (leave the tails on)

1tablespoon finely chopped garlic

2tablespoons fried sliced shallots

2 scallions, chopped to garnish

a handful of cadjunuts to garnish

METHOD

1.Put the tamarind paste in a small bowl, pour over the boiling water and stir well to break up any lumps. set aside for thirty minutes. Strain, pushing as much of the juice through as possible. Measure 6 tablespoons of the juice,

which is the amount needed, and store the rest in the fridge. Heat the oil in a wok. Add the chopped onion and fry till golden brown.

2. Add the sugar, stock, fish sauce, dried chillies and the tamarind juice, stirring well until all the sugar dissolves, Bring to a boil.

3.Add the shrimp, garlic and shallots. Stir-fry for about 3 -4 minutes until the shrimp are cooked.Garnish with the chopped scallion and sprinkle the cadju on top (if desired).

4.Serve with a bowl of steamed Rice .

  

Serves 4-6.
