Melbourne Film Set

In a significant milestone for cultural representation within the Australian cinematic landscape, the vibrant and multifaceted Sri Lankan community in Melbourne is set to take centre stage in the upcoming romantic comedy, Written in the Stars. This highly anticipated production, which serves as a cinematic adaptation of Su Dharmapala’s acclaimed 2013 debut novel, The Wedding Season, represents a monumental transition from the written word to the silver screen, over a decade after the literary work first captivated readers with its insightful portrayal of heritage and modern romance.

The film, an Australian-Canadian co-production, is strategically positioned to highlight the nuanced experiences of the Sri Lankan community, a demographic that has long contributed to the cultural tapestry of Melbourne. Featuring a distinguished international cast, the production stars the talented Sri Lankan-Australian actress Menik Gooneratne, who is joined by British actor Nikesh Patel and American actor Saagar Shaikh. This ensemble cast underscores the global appeal of the narrative while maintaining a profound connection to the local setting of Melbourne, where the story is meticulously rooted.

A Narrative Guided by Tradition and Modernity

At the heart of Written in the Stars is the journey of Shani, a 32-year-old professional woman who find herself at a personal and cultural crossroads. In a narrative device that elegantly weaves ancient traditions with contemporary life, Shani reluctantly agrees to let Vedic Astrology dictate her romantic pursuits, embarking on an ambitious quest of 90 dates in 90 days to discover her soulmate. This premise offers a sophisticated exploration of the intersections between ancestral wisdom and the fast-paced nature of modern dating, providing a lens through which the audience can appreciate the enduring relevance of cultural practices within the Sri Lankan community.

The script, expertly penned by Menik Gooneratne herself, was previously recognised by the prestigious Blacklist’s 2021 CAPE List, an initiative dedicated to elevating stories that feature diverse Asian Pacific characters and experiences. This accolade served as an early indicator of the script’s quality and its potential to resonate with audiences who seek authentic and multi-dimensional portrayals of immigrant life and cultural identity.

A Vision Twelve Years in the Making

For Su Dharmapala, the founder and CEO of polipedia.com.au and the author of the original novel, the journey to this cinematic adaptation has been one of persistence and dedication. Speaking on the project, Dharmapala expressed her profound admiration for the determination shown by Gooneratne and producer Leanne Tonkes in bringing this story to fruition. She noted that the timing of the adaptation is particularly instrumental, coinciding with a broader national conversation regarding multiculturalism and the intrinsic values that immigrants contribute to the Australian social fabric.

“We hope that you will be able to see on screen that immigrants bring more than dance and food to the plate,” Dharmapala remarked, emphasizing the intellectual and emotional depth of the community. “We bring joy, grit, and hope of a better, more happier society for all of us.” Such sentiments reflect the core mission of eLanka, which has, since 2005, sought to celebrate and share the positive stories of Sri Lankans worldwide, acting as a primary bridge between the heritage of the motherland and the reality of life in the diaspora.

Professional Excellence and Production Logistics

The production of Written in the Stars is scheduled to commence in Melbourne next month, bringing together a formidable team of professionals. The film is directed and executive produced by Fawzia Mirza, leading an all-female production team that exemplifies the industry’s shift towards greater gender diversity and leadership. The project has garnered significant institutional support, backed by Screen Australia and Telefilm Canada, ensuring that the production meets the highest standards of cinematic excellence.

The international distribution of the film is being managed by Blue Fox Entertainment at the Cannes Film Market, while Maslow Entertainment has secured the distribution rights for the Australian market. This structured approach to distribution ensures that the story of the Sri Lankan community in Melbourne will reach a global audience, further elevating the profile of Sri Lankan talent on the world stage.

Menik Gooneratne, whose previous work includes roles in Neighbours, Lion, and Mortal Engines, brings a wealth of experience to the lead role. Her British co-star, Nikesh Patel, is equally accomplished, with notable performances in Indian Summers and the Four Weddings and a Funeral miniseries. Their combined expertise, along with the creative vision of the production team, promises to deliver a film that is both entertaining and culturally significant.

Celebrating Community and Heritage

The emergence of Written in the Stars is particularly resonant for those within the Sri Lankan community in Melbourne, where social gatherings and cultural events are a cornerstone of communal life. For many, the themes of the film, ranging from the intricacies of Sri Lankan Weddings to the delicate balance of professional aspirations and familial expectations, will feel deeply personal. eLanka, as a comprehensive digital hub, remains committed to providing a platform for such stories, ensuring that the achievements of our community members are recognised and celebrated.

As the film progresses through its production phase, it serves as a beacon of the “Good News Stories” that eLanka strives to promote. By highlighting the successes of individuals like Menik Gooneratne and Su Dharmapala, we continue to uphold our values of authenticity and service excellence, fostering an environment where fellow Sri Lankans are encouraged to pursue their passions and achieve professional success.
