Nisala Foundation Appeals to Expand Meditation Hall in Sri Lanka
At a time when stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion have become part of daily life for many people around the world, places dedicated to silence, healing, and inner peace have become increasingly important. One such place in Sri Lanka is the Nisala Foundation — a charitable meditation centre that has quietly transformed the lives of countless individuals through compassion, mindfulness, and generosity.
Located amidst the tranquil natural beauty of Sri Lanka, Nisala Foundation has for years welcomed people from diverse backgrounds seeking peace, spiritual understanding, and emotional healing. What makes the Foundation especially unique is its unwavering commitment to offering its services entirely on a donation basis rather than as a commercial or fee-based operation.
Meditation teachings, food, accommodation, and related services are provided through the goodwill and generosity of donors and well-wishers, allowing individuals to participate regardless of their financial status. This charitable model has enabled Nisala Foundation to remain accessible to sincere seekers who may otherwise be unable to afford retreat programs and spiritual guidance offered elsewhere.
Nisala Work and Services
Residential Meditation Retreats
Nisala conducts residential meditation retreats where participants stay at the centre and fully dedicate themselves to meditation, silence, reflection, and inner practice. These retreats provide a rare opportunity for individuals to step away from daily pressures and enter a peaceful environment designed for deep inner transformation.
During these retreats, participants receive meditation guidance, food, accommodation, and a structured environment that supports discipline, simplicity, awareness, and inner stillness.
One-Day Silent Meditation Programs
Nisala also conducts one-day silent meditation programs for those who may not be able to attend longer residential retreats. These programs introduce participants to silence, mindfulness, inner observation, and meditative awareness within a shorter but meaningful setting.
They are especially helpful for working professionals, students, householders, and people experiencing stress or emotional pressure.
Yoga-Based Meditation and Inner Purification Practices
The foundation’s programs focus on yoga-based meditation and inner purification practices. These practices help participants cultivate clarity, compassion, emotional balance, discipline, and deep inner stillness.
The approach is practical, experiential, and deeply transformative. It helps people not only sit in meditation, but also live with greater awareness, patience, kindness, and inner strength.
Nisala Kriya Meditation Programs
Nisala Kriya is one of the core meditation practices offered through the foundation. It supports deep relaxation, nervous system balance, inner silence, and awareness. Many participants experience relief from stress, mental restlessness, emotional heaviness, and inner tension through this practice.
Nisala Kriya is taught as a practical method for daily life, helping people return to a state of calmness, clarity, and presence.
Online Meditation and Awareness Sessions
In addition to in-person programs, Nisala conducts online meditation and awareness sessions for local and international participants. This has allowed people living overseas, including Sri Lankans abroad, to remain connected to the teachings and continue their practice from wherever they live.
Online sessions have also made meditation more accessible to those who cannot physically travel to the centre.
Stress Relief and Emotional Well-Being Support
Many individuals come to Nisala seeking support for stress, anxiety, sadness, emotional exhaustion, mental pressure, and inner restlessness. Through meditation, silence, awareness, and guidance, Nisala helps people find emotional balance and mental clarity.
This makes Nisala’s work highly relevant to mental health awareness and personal well-being in modern society.
Programs for Healthcare Professionals
Nisala has conducted meditation programs for healthcare professionals at several major institutions, including Cancer Hospital, Kalubowila Hospital, Katugastota Hospital, Colombo General Hospital, and Sirimavo Bandaranayake Children’s Hospital.
These programs support doctors, medical professionals, and hospital staff who often work under pressure and emotional strain. Meditation helps them cultivate calmness, compassion, focus, and resilience in their demanding professional environments.
Monthly Meditation Sessions with Medical Professionals
Nisala has also conducted monthly meditation sessions at the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress in collaboration with the Medical Doctors Welfare Association of Kandy.
These sessions have helped medical professionals integrate mindfulness and meditation into their personal lives and professional responsibilities.
Programs for Universities and Academic Institutions
Nisala has conducted programs for academic staff and students at leading universities and higher education institutions, including the University of Peradeniya, University of Moratuwa, and SLIIT.
These programs help students and academic staff manage stress, improve focus, develop emotional balance, and cultivate a healthier relationship with learning, work, and life.
Programs for Professional Bodies
Nisala has conducted meditation programs for professional groups such as the Institute of Engineers of Sri Lanka, including the Ruhunu, Wayamba, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering sections.
These programs help professionals manage workplace stress, develop clarity of thought, and bring mindfulness into leadership, decision-making, and daily responsibilities.
Programs for Government Institutions
Nisala has also conducted meditation and mindfulness programs for government institutions such as Sri Lanka Immigration, Sri Lanka Customs, and the Insurance Corporation.
These programs support public sector employees in developing patience, awareness, emotional balance, and inner calm while carrying out their duties.
Programs for the Armed Forces and Disabled Army Personnel
Nisala has conducted specialized programs for Sri Lanka Armed Forces personnel and disabled Army personnel, including programs connected with Abhimansala.
These programs are especially meaningful, as they offer meditation, emotional support, and inner healing to those who have served the country and may carry physical, mental, or emotional burdens.
Corporate Mindfulness and Well-Being Programs
Nisala has conducted mindfulness workshops for corporate institutions such as SriLankan Airlines Aviation College, Jetwing Hotels, and CEB Engineers.
These programs help employees and professional teams reduce stress, improve focus, develop emotional intelligence, and create healthier working environments.
Community-Based Programs for Youth
Nisala conducts community-based programs for youth across various regions. These programs help young people develop discipline, emotional awareness, focus, self-confidence, and inner stability.
In a time when many young people face confusion, pressure, anxiety, and distraction, meditation can help them build a strong foundation for life.
Programs for Senior Citizens
Nisala also supports senior citizens through meditation and community-based awareness programs. These sessions help elderly participants experience peace, emotional comfort, inner reflection, and a deeper sense of acceptance and well-being.
Meditation can be especially valuable in later life, supporting calmness, gratitude, and mental ease.
Support for People from All Walks of Life
Nisala welcomes individuals from many backgrounds, beliefs, professions, and nationalities. The centre serves people who are seeking peace, healing, clarity, emotional relief, spiritual growth, or simply a quiet space to reconnect with themselves.
The work of Nisala is inclusive, compassionate, and open to all who sincerely wish to benefit from meditation and inner development.
Why A Larger Hall is Required?
Today, the Foundation faces a new and meaningful challenge.
With a growing number of local and international participants attending retreats and meditation programs, the existing meditation hall and accommodation facilities are no longer sufficient to meet demand. In response, Nisala Foundation has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the expansion of its meditation hall together with additional dormitory facilities.

Current Meditation Hall
A Place Where Lives Are Transformed
The prposed expansion is not merely a building project. It represents the continuation of a charitable mission dedicated to supporting human well-being, mindfulness, and spiritual growth.
According to the Foundation, approximately LKR 7 million — equivalent to around AED 29,744 — is required to complete the meditation hall and dormitory project.
Once completed, the expanded facilities will allow the Foundation to:
- Accommodate more participants during retreats and meditation programs
- Improve living facilities for visiting meditators
- Continue providing food, accommodation, and teachings on a donation basis
- Offer a peaceful environment for healing, contemplation, and self-development
- Extend its charitable outreach to a greater number of people (more than 200 participants to meditate one time)
In an increasingly commercialised world, Nisala Foundation stands apart through its spirit of service and generosity. Its work reflects the timeless values of compassion, mindfulness, and shared humanity — values that continue to resonate deeply with people searching for balance and inner calm.

Construction Area of New Hall
Supporters of the project say the expansion will help preserve an important sanctuary where individuals can step away from the pressures of modern life and reconnect with themselves in an atmosphere of silence and care.
The GoFundMe campaign invites contributions of any size, reminding supporters that every donation directly contributes toward creating a larger and more welcoming space for meditation and spiritual practice.
