Many prominent educational institutions in the world boast of unique traditions, customs and behaviours that intricately define their institutional identity. Yet, the camaraderie experienced, and the timeless connections forged at Reid avenue are unparalleled, and truly defines the institution that is Royal College, Colombo. Once a Royalist always a Royalist!
In a testament to the enduring brotherhood and in the spirit gracefully passed down through generations, this year, the 92 Group of Royal College celebrated their collective 50th birthdays in grand style. The festivities were kicked-off during the 144th Battle of the Blues and reached a crescendo in the home country at the gala dinner, ‘Aged to Perfection’ during September. This month the baton was passed onto to the Australia members of 92 group that continued the festivities rekindling the cherished memories of past in grand style amidst the iconic backdrop of the city of Sydney, and was attended by mates from 5 Australian cities from Adelaide to Brisbane. Old friendships were rekindled, and the passage of time seemed to fade away as everyone embraced the chance to reminisce about the days spent together a long time ago. The camaraderie witnessed was nothing short of magical, as if the intervening years had been compressed into nothing more than the typical school holiday.
The event planning started 6 months ago by Sydneysiders Thaya and CP, and included brunches and night outs over three days (24th to 26th November) . Animated conversations flowed effortlessly at each juncture, fueled by a genuine sense of connection that transcended the years since they last met, while they enjoyed the tasty Sri Lankan, Chinese food or the odd ice cream.
The main event was a four hour Latin cruise along Darling harbour where all members were adorned with personalised hats, polo-shirts and wrist bands creating a vibrant and unified visual spectacle. The event was kicked off with a photo shoot in-front of the iconic Sydney harbour bridge and Opera House, orchestrated by the professional, and joyous, cameraman Roy from RoyGrafix. Many a local and tourist alike lined up to take pictures with this remarkable group, recognizing the unique spirit they embodied. As the night unfolded, it was evident that the get-together was more than a reunion; it was a reaffirmation of the enduring ties that bind school mates together in a tapestry of shared laughter, mutual support, and of course some good ‘spirits’. The party on board continued with South American dance music Samba, and Salsa and Capoeira dances with the highlight being the electrifying dance-off where batch mate Johnny emerged victorious, claiming the coveted title alongside an unknown “bride to be” partner. The weekend was meticulously planned and immensely enjoyed by all participants where each face, lined with the wisdom of years, bore the unmistakable imprint of the Reid Avenue’s timeless experience.
