In an ambitious coordinated effort to bolster transportation security and mitigate urban vulnerabilities across the Asia-Pacific region, Sri Lanka has officially been integrated into a comprehensive, multi-national road safety initiative backed by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). As part of this sweeping regional endeavour, fifteen nations have convened to address critical traffic hazards, with Sri Lanka specifically targeting safety enhancements at fifteen high-risk pedestrian crossing locations throughout the country. This strategic undertaking is facilitated under the auspices of the FIA Safe Mobility 4 All & 4 Life programme, which is delivered in close collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and generously supported by the FIA Foundation.

The overarching initiative represents a vital convergence of international expertise, governmental authority, and local stakeholder engagement. Over recent months, Member Club and government authority representatives from participating countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam, underwent hundreds of hours of rigorous education and training alongside international road safety specialists. These intensive capacity-building sessions were meticulously designed to equip regional leaders with the theoretical frameworks and empirical methodologies necessary to craft tailored national action plans.

Tailored Solutions for Diverse Urban Landscapes

The diversity inherent to the Asia-Pacific region necessitates a nuanced, decentralised approach to traffic management and infrastructure design. While uniform global standards provide a foundational baseline, localized hazard profiles demand highly specialized interventions. According to Stefano Ammirati, FIA Director of Global Advocacy, the distinct strength of this programme lies in its decentralized conception: “The fantastic thing about this programme is that all the projects are developed by experts who have the best understanding of the road safety challenges facing their countries. Just as every country in the region is diverse, so too are the solutions needed to support road safety and save lives. Through this programme, Member Clubs and government authorities have come together to create initiatives that best meet the unique needs of road users in their communities.”

This philosophy of contextual adaptation is vividly reflected in the varied scope and focus areas adopted by participating states. In Australia, the strategic focus has been directed toward public comprehension of vehicle automation and supervised driving systems, addressing the regulatory and cognitive challenges posed by emerging automotive technologies. Meanwhile, in Japan, intricate child safety measures are being investigated along the school commute, deploying specialized sensors attached to schoolbags to identify erratic pedestrian behaviour, such as unstable walking or sudden darting into vehicular thoroughfares. In Vietnam, advanced technological applications including artificial intelligence and computer vision are being harnessed to detect non-standard motorcycle helmet usage amongst university student populations.

For Sri Lanka, the national imperative centres resolutely upon pedestrian protection. By concentrating vital resources and engineering upgrades on fifteen identified high-risk pedestrian crossing locations, the country aims to establish a replicable benchmark for urban crosswalk safety. Pedestrians, frequently recognized as the most vulnerable cohort within modern transport ecosystems, stand to benefit immensely from targeted infrastructural enhancements, improved lighting, enhanced signage, and modern traffic calming measures designed to eliminate preventable accidents.

Bridging Research and Practical Implementation

The institutional architecture underpinning these projects is anchored by the FIA Safe Mobility 4 All & 4 Life programme. Operating across all four of the governing body’s mobility regions, the framework engages approximately 59 Member Clubs across 55 countries, creating an expansive global network of shared knowledge and collaborative engineering. The launch in the Asia-Pacific region follows closely on the heels of similar programmatic rollouts, such as the successful implementation across the Americas secured by FIA funding in preceding cycles.

Institutional mechanisms have been deliberately structured to bridge the persistent gap between academic research and actionable municipal policy. Municipalities and national transit authorities frequently grapple with an abundance of theoretical safety data yet face significant structural hurdles when translating those insights into tangible, on-the-ground engineering solutions. By providing participants with specialized expertise, enduring partnerships, and an international collaborative network, the programme empowers local authorities to convert high-level concepts into impactful, life-saving realities.

Furthermore, the collaborative ethos fostered by UNITAR ensures that educational components adhere to rigorous international standards of sustainable development and public governance. Training modules encompass comprehensive risk assessment, data-driven site selection, public awareness campaigns, and post-implementation impact evaluation. This holistic methodology ensures that infrastructure improvements are not viewed as isolated construction events, but rather as integral components of a long-term strategy aimed at cultivating a deeply embedded culture of road safety.

Toward a Sustainable Regional Future

As these seventeen distinct projects go live across the fifteen participating nations, the long-term vision extends far beyond immediate infrastructural upgrades. Stakeholders and international observers anticipate that successful pilot schemes will generate empirical data and operational models worthy of broader regional replication. As Stefano Ammirati noted, “Some initiatives may have the potential to be scaled up and replicated at regional level in the future. Regardless of their scope or duration, all projects share a common ambition: to deliver lasting and meaningful improvements that save lives.”

For Sri Lanka, participation in this prestigious regional undertaking underscores a steadfast national commitment to modernizing urban infrastructure and safeguarding vulnerable citizens. As the nation’s transport authorities implement these vital upgrades across the fifteen targeted pedestrian crossings, the broader community, including the global Sri Lankan community and expatriates observing from abroad, can take profound pride in this proactive stride toward sustainable urban development. By aligning local expertise with international institutional backing, Sri Lanka is actively forging a safer, more resilient future for all road users.
