Sri Lanka has achieved a significant milestone in its journey of recovery and renewal. The latest World Bank classifications now

recognise our country as an Upper-Middle-Income nation once again — a recognition that’s both meaningful and encouraging. It shows that Sri Lanka is steadily progressing, rebuilding trust, and demonstrating our resilience despite the economic hurdles we’ve faced.

Sri Lanka is making positive strides in rebuilding trust by focusing on two key national efforts: stabilising the economy through an IMF program to regain policy credibility, and recovering from the devastation of Cyclone Ditwah. The government has also set up the Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund, which has successfully raised over Rs. 6 billion in local and foreign currencies to help repair vital infrastructure.

Key Financial Metrics Behind the Upgrade

Every year, the World Bank refreshes its classification system with the Atlas methodology to better understand how countries are doing economically.

Sri Lanka’s 2025 Atlas GNI per capita stands at $4,670, just $34 above the $4,636 mark needed for upper-middle-income status. This slight margin highlights the country’s progress towards that classification.

In 2025, the country enjoyed a healthy 5% growth in real GDP, thanks to a lively rebound in manufacturing, tourism, and financial services. This positive trend reflects the resilience and vibrancy of the economy.

Historical Context: It’s been exactly three years since the challenging economic crisis of 2022. Back in 2019, Sri Lanka was proud to hold upper-middle-income status, but unfortunately, economic downturns led to its downgrade.

A Proud Moment for Our Nation

This reclassification is more than just a statistical upgrade; it’s a sign of our progress and resilience. It highlights the stronger macroeconomic stability we’ve built through stronger reserves, firmer fiscal discipline, and a consistent recovery in key sectors. It also shows how growing investor confidence is sparking fresh

interest in tourism, manufacturing, IT services, and renewable energy.

Most importantly, it reflects the incredible determination of the Sri Lankan people—whose sacrifices, discipline, and perseverance have truly helped stabilise our economy and rebuild our international credibility. After facing one of the toughest economic times in our post-independence history, this achievement is a real turning point. It’s a proud moment for us all—a time to pause, celebrate how far we’ve come, and look forward with hope and renewed commitment.

A Warm Message to Our Global Sri Lankan Community

Throughout Australia, Europe, the Middle East, North America, and more, the Sri Lankan diaspora has been a vital source of support during times of great challenge for the nation. Their remittances, professional skills, advocacy efforts, and community leadership have all made a meaningful difference in helping Sri Lanka stay resilient and hopeful.

For our global community, this news brings a sense of hope and unity. It’s inspiring to see Sri Lanka regaining its strength, and we can all be proud of the resilience shown by our people and institutions. There’s a real sense of confidence now that the country is headed toward lasting stability and growth. Especially for our diaspora communities, like those in Australia, this is a reminder that they have always been a vital bridge between our heritage and new opportunities. This moment makes that bridge even stronger, highlighting the incredible potential of Sri Lanka and how each of us can contribute to its bright future.

A New Chapter of Responsibility and Opportunity

Regaining Upper-Middle-Income status marks the start of an exciting new chapter, full of opportunities. It invites us to continue with meaningful reforms that secure lasting economic stability.

Together, we can foster inclusive growth that supports our rural communities, small businesses, and vibrant youth.

Embracing innovation and investing in education, technology, agriculture, and green development will pave the way forward.

Building stronger global partnerships, especially with countries where Sri Lankans have created lively, diverse communities, is essential. This moment is a wonderful opportunity for us all — at home and abroad — to come together, ensuring that our progress not only continues but speeds up, creating a brighter future for everyone.

A Shared Achievement, A Shared Future

As we keep strengthening the bond between Sri Lankans in Australia and all around the world and the loving heartbeat of our homeland, this milestone is a meaningful reminder:

Sri Lanka is on the rise once more. Sri Lanka is resilient and full of hope.

Sri Lanka is prepared for what’s ahead.

And every Sri Lankan — whether you’re in Kandy, Kiwullinda, Melbourne, Toronto, or Dubai — you are an important part of this incredible story.
