Sri Lanka’s Sevens Rugby eliminated in Quarter Finals.Disappointing Games for Lanka with plenty to do to lift standards. BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. (eLanka Sports Editor)

TREVINE RODRIGO

Sri Lanka’s hopes of a medal in Rugby took a nose dive in sheer disappointing performances at the Asian Games in Japan.

After topping their group, Sri Lanka remained unbeaten with wins over Philippines 22-17, Singapore 33-17 and UAE 17-5.

With hopes raised, they qualified for the semis against China but were eliminated after conceding a 5-14 lead at half time before clawing their way back, but it was too little too late losing 12-19 and were knocked out of medal contention.

It was a disappointing result from a Sri Lankan perspective seeing China appeared to be the better choice to get past from the top tier in Asia where hosts Japan, Hong Kong China and South Korea are the front runners for Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Things got worse for the Lankans in the play-offs for 5th to 8th spots when their return clash against Philippines ended with a disastrous 33-12 thrashing.

Sri Lanka will now have to salvage some pride in the play-off for 7th and 8th place with UAE.

Sri Lanka’s battered image recently has the sports selection committee with plenty to ponder about the unavailability of genuine talent in the country and what needs to be done at grassroots level to turn things around.

There’s plenty to work on in team sport as well as in Track events where Javelin hero Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage and Sri Lanka’s Women’s and men’s cricketers the only shining lights in the disappointing Games campaign so far.
