THARANGA NANAYAKKARA RENOWNED AS ‘RADIO THARANGA’ A MULTIPOTENTIALITY INDIVIDUAL ALREADY AN ICON IN FM RADIO CHANNELS IN AN UNTARNISHED SCINTILLATING FLAWLESS VOYAGE – By Sunil Thenabadu

Tharanga Nanayakkara

“The world of live broadcasting is so unpredictable, anything can happen that could derail one of your shows; by an angry caller, technical issues, guests being uncooperative or not showing up. In these situations, it’s important to think of your station as a professional environment and behave appropriately. Do not freak out. Don’t abandon all hopes. Put your thinking cap on; it’s problem-solving time. You’re not the only one affected in these situations, everyone else at the station may start to panic, so it’s your job to keep calm and reassure everyone. If you can all stay  calm , collected and composed, you’ll be better equipped to solve any problems Who wants to listen to a boring person? The last thing anyone wants to hear on the radio is a dull personality presenting. Instead, you should paint pictures with words to captivate your audiences. Discover here, in no order”

Tharanga Nanayakkara acclaimed as ‘Radio Tharanga” to those in the same field reminiscences her younger days when about four years old she used to voice loudly standing on the step of their dwelling well to the  fauna and flora to an abundant of trees around jak, mango, breadfruit ,birds  even  butterflies nearby in the vicinity pretending dreaming as if she was presenting in a radio beam perhaps having had innate talent not of course having any hereditary affiliations. This she believes had foretold as a blessing in disguise to her becoming a reputed radio presenter of repute  As she grew up she had questioned her father about her voice which she believed to be of a male expressive voice to which he had said obviously no not at all. Her mother’s wish of course had been to educate her to occupy a high position in society

Tharanga was born in Matara her mother’s native dwelling Batheegama close to Dickwella  Her parents are Gunasena Nanayakkara and mother Ramani Amarakone while two younger siblings both brothers Dinesh and Manjula.Tharanga had tied the nuptial knot with Dilantha Jayasekera. Immediately after her birth the family had moved to Embilipitiya to live. She had entered to grade 1 to the Embilipitiya National school,  the Central College up to grade five when she had triumphed in the grade five scholarship examination Tharanga had been admitted to Matara Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya to fulfil her mother’s dream. She at the tender age of eleven years only, had been forced to enter into mother’s dream. She has professed that mother was happy but she was unhappy, terribly sad as she was to be boarded at Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya hostel. Up to that day she had never slept on her own but constantly with her mother. She had been taken to the hostel and handed over to the Matron Gangani. Mother to pacify her had told her the beach is in the vicinity as Tharanga loved the sea beaches had acknowledged she could view the sea constantly. As there was no beach seen Tharanga had questioned her mother where is the sea beach you were talking of. It was stated later just to motivate Tharanga. She had observed  Mother had left walking through a long basketball facility, had not looked back when Tharanga yelled to which she had explained later as it would have hurt her too if she looked back at the yelling Tharanga. But soon Tharanga had got used to the environment in the school and the hostel.Though she too had acquired the slightly different Sinhalese vernacular  of the southern  people she had not unveiled it much..

Tharanga more than concentrating on studies had been  a school senior prefect  but involved in countless  external activities like school drama, presenting, organising events ,had participated in sports Netball ,Volleyball had been the House Captain, Senior Prefect, President of Literary committee, Director and script writer  etc .Though all the teachers wanted her to study as her mother too had wished. However it was difficult to turn her away from this path which her mother also had approved and consented. During this tenure she had got used to the microphone having had friendly dispositions and links with the ‘Ruhunu Sevaya’ of the SLBC having contributed to school program ‘Mal Mal Waram’..While during the tenure of the school had won ‘Thurunu Shakthi’. One day when she proceeded to the office room the Vice Principal had proposed her to participate to the ‘Sawana Niwedaka Radio competition’ held at St Servatius College Matara where there were several rivalries in poetry ,verses, presenting etc. she could hear Asiri Priyantha Mulmullage the first presenter in the private FM radio  (Frequency Modulation ) announcing that the triumphant competitor would be given the opportunity to be elected to the “Savana” FM radio channel under illustrious  Jackson Anthony. She had thought to herself that she could make to the first five not principally the first. After several rounds of adjudications Tharanga had been elected as the winner. Tharanga had felt that Mekala Wasundara and Shantha Ponnapperuma  duo also stalwarts in the fm radio arena too wanted this village lass Tharanga to be brought to ‘Sawana’.After she joined she had professed it was not like it was presented like on a flower tray but was challenging which had to be seriously learnt ,which she had navigated through impediments too which had made her at least somewhat important to her superiors. She had been labouring in ‘Sawana” only for a few months as a relief announcer, when it was elevated and modernised to Sri FM  Then with the departure of renowned Jackson Anthony to the Swarnavahini television channel Tharanga had to work under the new  head Mahen Perera.
THARANGA NANAYAKKARA
When the village girl having come to Colombo for the first time was not conversant with many mannerisms that needed to be tracked. When she entered the  smart fair Mahen Perera’s room she observed on his table on one side ‘grapes’ and on the other side ‘green tea’ which site was dreadfully foreign to her. He used to  munch  a grape and sip green tea , was in a very comfort zone. She instantly remembered how her father had briefed her the manner how the Englishmen  ‘eat and drink’ which was different to the Sinhalese. She had for a moment thought to herself whether this was the end of her dream of being a radio presenter. No she thought otherwise of been robust with the boss and the Shri FM radio team by learning overall everything including the ‘ “mixing console’ an electric device for mixing audio signals’, the manner to manipulate playing the songs and the manner to oblige those who request for songs and other sundry responsibilities. Tharanga was responsible in presenting programs as a member of the starting group ‘Ayubowan Sri Lanka’, ‘Sri Rashmiya’, and many supplementary programs.  The first day when was taken to the operating room she was amazed to see Bashini Samarasinghe wearing hand gloves and ice caps to her she believed whether she was inside a planetarium. She thought to herself ‘Will I be able to negotiate and navigate over ’.But she triumphed over all constraints by following all approaches and procedures to precision owing to her immense passion for this field. But before long for playing a song of her choice she was dismissed within seconds  from the Shree FM radio  to be mentally dwindled. During her tenure she had been responsible for presenting  popular programs as  Immediately she had called her mother requesting her to take her back to the village. Thereafter she had called renowned Jackson Anthony about this catastrophe when re added the phrase “how many tall buildings are around us, but the beauty of them is not possessed by those occupying in them” advised to keep this strictly in mind Tharanga has confessed that to those individuals who have hurt her she has always has had compassion with no fury too. On that only Tharanga had known what was uttered by Jackson Anthony. The moment she had met Jackson Anthony initially she was not at all contemporary girl but a typical simple village lass with a ‘pony tail’ .But not after a couple of years  one would say a ‘polished girl’ in par and equality with her counterparts Tharanga had not gone to her village after her firing but after an elongated pause she was selected to Sirasa a blessing in disguise  which she described as a massive ‘Radio University’. This was a turning point on her eminent career having got to know and opportunity to work with stalwarts and heavyweights after the gigantic contributions made by  to the FM radios by Premakeethi De Alwis, Nimal Lakshapathiarachchi.
THARANGA NANAYAKKARA
Tharanga was very fortunate and lucky  to work under the expertise of personalities like of  Jackson Anthony, Wasantha Dukgannarala, Kingsley Ratnayake, Nihal Wickremasuriya,Lal Sarath Kumara,Nihal Wickrema Wijesuriya,Lal Sarath Kumara,Nishanthi Dilruckshi etc, Tharanga believes this tenure had been an opportunity of a life time that she was very lucky, blessed and privileged which simultaneously boosted her confidence. During her younger days she recollected those voices over the radio and to address them as Aiya,Akke had been an astonishingly a huge privilege The respect to them Tharanga still possesses to the identical level
After a few years as a competent presenter she had joined Y FM under renowned Thanuja Jayawardena.where Tharanga was entrusted  the program ‘love dreams’, while attached there she has had diverse experiences. Thereafter Tharanga comes back to Sirasa FM.While serving the Sirasa she admits there is a ‘boomi dosayak ’ as one who comes in never deem in leaving. She had contributed to programs such as ‘Suriya Sirasa’, ‘Dahasak Mal’, ;Pahan Piyasa’, ‘Mura Adaviya’ etc. In year 2022 Tharanga  had been adjudicated as the best radio announcer a very prestigious award to any radio presenter.
Then Tharanga gets calls from Neth FM repeatedly to join them knowing her expertise and value..She had decided to join Neth FM at which she is very comfortable serves them very happily and contentedly .She believes that we all live in a fantasy world searching for true love. Many search for true love which to Tharanga is very greedy. ”On a FB quote it had been said that if a person finds an understanding partner in samsara live by facing sufferings need not attain nibbana. If one does not find such a partner   accommplish good deeds to seek Nivana”.
