THE GOOD NEWS The Quiet Revival: A Generation Awakens to Faith – By Charles Schokman

This draws from the findings of The Quiet Revival, a major research report released in 2024 by Bible Society and conducted by YouGov. The report challenges one of the most widely accepted cultural narratives in the UK: that Christianity is in irreversible decline.

For years, it seemed the evidence was overwhelming—dwindling attendance, ageing congregations, and the increasing dominance of secularism. The 2021 census confirmed what many had long assumed: Christianity was no longer the majority religion in England and Wales. But The Quiet Revival offers a startlingly different picture—one that is both deeply hopeful and profoundly timely.

The data reveals that monthly church attendance is not falling but rising—particularly among young adults. Since 2018, attendance among 18–24-year-olds has quadrupled, from 4% to 16%. For young men, the figure is even more striking, sitting at 21%. Today, a third of all regular churchgoers in England and Wales are aged between 18 and 34.

This isn’t a return to cultural Christianity. It’s a fresh wave of intentional faith. This generation isn’t attending out of habit or heritage; they’re showing up by choice. They are reading Scripture (67% of young churchgoers read the Bible weekly), engaging in spiritual practices, and seeking authentic community. They are looking for something real—something rooted, transcendent, and transformative.

And it’s changing them.

The data shows that churchgoers, particularly among younger demographics, experience higher levels of life satisfaction and lower rates of anxiety and depression. In a cultural moment marked by disconnection, exhaustion, and loneliness, the local church is quietly becoming a refuge of meaning, stability, and joy.

There is also a noticeable shift in the demographics and character of the Church. Pentecostal and Catholic churches are among the fastest growing. A third of all churchgoers aged 18–54 come from ethnic minority backgrounds. The Church is increasingly diverse, expressive, and socially engaged. Churchgoers are far more likely than the general public to volunteer, donate to charities, give to food banks, and serve their communities.

But perhaps the most remarkable thing about this revival is how quiet it is. There is no grand movement, no sweeping public campaign. It’s not driven by celebrity pastors or major events. It’s happening at ground level—in relationships, small communities, and ordinary churches faithfully offering the extraordinary hope of Jesus.

So what does this mean for us?

First, this is a moment that requires depth. The hunger is real—but so is the need for discipleship. While Bible engagement is increasing, many young Christians feel under-equipped to understand and live out their faith. This is our opportunity to invest deeply in the formation of this generation. We must teach the Scriptures as the story we live in, not just the truth we believe. We must make space for questions, depth, and spiritual practice.

Second, we must renew our focus on relationships. One of the report’s most striking findings is that 34% of unchurched young adults would consider attending church if invited by a friend. Not a platform or event—a friend. In a world saturated with noise and content, what cuts through is invitation. The revival is relational.

Finally, this is a call to reimagine the Church not as a monument to the past, but as a movement for the future. A new kind of church is emerging—diverse, passionate, justice-minded, and Scripture-hungry. This is not a return to Christendom. It is something humbler, and perhaps holier: a quiet movement of people whose lives are being reshaped by Jesus in ways that ripple outward into families, friendships, and culture.

As Paul Williams notes in the foreword to The Quiet Revival, “We are living through a period of re-evangelisation.” The tide is turning—not back to old power structures, but toward a renewed Church marked by conviction, compassion, and courage.

This is a moment for leaders and churches to act—not to protect what was, but to prepare for what’s emerging. To open our doors wide. To lift our eyes. To believe again that God is moving—not in headlines, but in hearts.

The revival may be quiet, but it is real. And it’s just beginning.
