Thucydides trap-by Harold Gunatillake

Thucydides trap-by Harold Gunatillake

“You’re the declining power, and we are the rising power… please accept our growth and avoid resistance.” This message refers to the concept of the “Thucydides Trap,” emphasising the natural shift of power and encouraging acceptance rather than conflict.

Thucydides trap-by Harold Gunatillake

I came across a LinkedIn post by Deepinder S, the Founder of Deepindersingh.com and a Strategic Affairs & International Relations Analyst. He shared that Mr Xi’s message to Mr Trump was quite straightforward: “You’re the declining power; we are the rising power. … So, the question for you is whether you’re going to accept our rise and not resist.” The post was titled “What Australia Should Learn from Trump’s China Visit:

‘Two Powers, One Australia.'”

No reputable sources are suggesting that Xi Jinping ever told Donald Trump, whether at a banquet or privately, “You’re the declining power, we are the rising power… accept our rise and not resist.”

What we know is that Xi publicly mentioned the “Thucydides Trap” during Trump’s visit to Beijing in 2026 — a well-known analogy about a rising China and a declining United States — but he didn’t use it as a blunt, personal insult.

What Xi said — based on verified reporting

Across multiple reputable sources (ABC News, The Guardian), Xi’s public remarks included:

A reference to the world being at a “new crossroads.”

A question about whether China and the U.S. can avoid the Thucydides Trap — the idea that a rising power (China) and an established power (U.S.) risk conflict.

A warning that mishandling Taiwan could push the two nations into conflict.

A later conciliatory statement at the banquet was that “making America great again and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation can go hand in hand.”

None of these statements matches the alleged quote. Where the “declining nation” idea came from

The only documented reference to U.S. “decline” came not from Xi, but from Trump’s own interpretation of Xi’s classical analogy.

Trump posted on Truth Social that Xi had “very elegantly referred to the United States as perhaps being a declining nation,” and Trump reframed it as referring to the Biden years.

This was Trump’s spin, not Xi’s direct wording.

Why the rumour sounds plausible — but isn’t verified The alleged quote resembles:

Western strategic commentary about China’s rise vs U.S. decline Graham Allison’s Thucydides Trap framework, which Xi referenced Trump’s own rhetoric about “decline under Biden”

But no source attributes the insulting phrasing to Xi himself.

Bottom line

The quote isn’t quite accurate. Xi Jinping didn’t say this to Trump during the banquet dinner or in any other public or private setting documented by trusted sources. Instead, he mentioned the Thucydides Trap—a gentle, respectful way of talking about the transfer of power—and Trump later misunderstood it as a remark on U.S. decline. Keep in mind that when discussing political claims,

it’s always best to double-check with reliable primary sources. Rumours like “Xi insulted Trump at dinner by calling the U.S. a declining power” usually don’t just come out of nowhere; they often reflect familiar patterns of political psychology, media influences, and international rivalry.
