Held within the venerable and historically resonant walls of Courtroom 600 at the Nuremberg Palace of Justice in Germany, this monumental triumph marks the first time in history that a Sri Lankan academic institution has secured the championship title at this globally renowned competition. Overcoming intense intellectual competition from 130 brilliant competitors representing 34 international universities across 25 continents and regions, the Sri Lankan delegation demonstrated flawless advocacy, profound jurisprudential insight, and unwavering dedication to international criminal justice.

The Magnitude of the Nuremberg Moot Court

Established to honor the legacy of the historic Nuremberg Trials, the Nuremberg Moot Court is widely regarded as one of the most elite and rigorous international law mooting competitions in existence. Participating institutions are subjected to rigorous evaluation phases, where complex hypothetical cases involving war crimes, crimes against humanity, and individual criminal responsibility are meticulously analyzed and argued.

The 2026 edition presented formidable intellectual hurdles, requiring participating teams to master intricate nuances of international humanitarian law and criminal procedure. For months leading up to the oral rounds, scholars were expected to construct exhaustive written memorials and deliver compelling oral arguments under relentless scrutiny from panels of distinguished international judges, prosecutors, and academic authorities.

Meet the Champions: Exceptional Minds of the University of Colombo

The extraordinary success of the University of Colombo Faculty of Law was forged through the collective brilliance and tireless preparation of a dedicated student delegation comprising Gevindu Gamage, Sahanma Achchige, and Zaman Mohamed Nazar. Each member contributed distinct analytical rigor, masterful rhetorical skill, and a deep comprehension of jurisprudence that consistently confounded opposing counsel throughout the preliminary and advanced rounds.

Adding further distinction to this historic achievement, Zaman Mohamed Nazar delivered a series of breathtaking oral submissions that earned him recognition as one of only three recipients of the highly coveted “Best Speaker” awards presented throughout the entire global competition. This individual accolade underscores the world-class caliber of legal training imparted at the University of Colombo, proving that Sri Lankan scholars can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the finest legal minds globally.

Pedagogical Stewardship and Guidance

Behind every championship-winning delegation lies a framework of exceptional mentorship and strategic preparation. The University of Colombo team’s triumphant campaign was expertly guided and coached by Buthmini Levhara Mohotty and Mahin De Silva. Through countless hours of simulated court sessions, rigorous cross-examinations, and meticulous refinement of legal arguments, the coaches instilled in the students the discipline, composure, and intellectual agility necessary to excel on the world stage. Their pedagogical stewardship was instrumental in transforming raw talent into a cohesive, unstoppable legal unit.

The Grand Final Bench and International Recognition

The championship round of the Nuremberg Moot Court 2026 was presided over by an exceptionally prestigious judicial bench, led by International Criminal Court Judge Joanna Korner CMG KC. Sitting alongside Judge Korner were esteemed international and national jurists, prosecutors, and civil society leaders whose exacting questioning tested the limits of the finalists’ legal reasoning.

Following an intense exchange of arguments, the judges and the hosts, the International Nuremberg Principles Academy and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, offered glowing commendations to the Sri Lankan champions. Official statements highlighted the team’s peerless advocacy, flawless legal analysis, and steadfast commitment to justice, cementing their victory as one of the most remarkable accomplishments in the history of international mooting.

A Proud Chapter for the Global Sri Lankan Community

The ramifications of this victory extend far beyond the academic sphere. By claiming the Nuremberg Moot Court 2026 championship, the University of Colombo Faculty of Law has elevated Sri Lanka’s standing in international higher education and legal scholarship. This achievement serves as a powerful testament to the intellectual capacity, perseverance, and global competitiveness of Sri Lankan youth. As these young legal minds return home carrying the prestigious trophy, they pave the way for future generations of Sri Lankan scholars to dream without limits and conquer international arenas with confidence.
