Vale Max Gomez: Goodbye Is Not Forever – By Lawrence Machado

Vale Max Gomez Goodbye Is Not Forever - By Lawrence Machado

We grieve, and yet celebrate the rich life of our brother-in-law, Max Gomez, who was very special in our lives.

Max, who was married to our third sister, Belinda, breathed his last on Sunday, August 23, in a Melbourne hospital after a very brave battle with cancer.

Max was a very loving and caring husband, father, brother, grandpa, brother-in-law, and uncle, while showering his extended family and cousins with unlimited generosity and kindness to everyone he met. Max loved to help people and served as a Knight of the Southern Cross and as a dedicated volunteer for several organisations, starting from his school days, where he was a big part of the science clubs.

His life was full of faith even to the end, as he surrendered his earthly life to Jesus Christ, his Saviour. Max, true to form, did not let his cancer dictate his life and continued to do the things he loved, even teaching for a few hours when he could.

He used to say he would go when his God called him, not when the doctors said he had to go. That powerful faith and the amazing care from his family and hospital staff kept him going, especially through the last days.

Max, the son of the late Gabby and Mary Gomez, is survived by Belinda, children Marsha, Frayne and Anthea, siblings Ronald Gomez and Roshini Machado, sons-in-law David Pretty and Brayden Miller, grandchildren Nate, Zach, Mara and Nina, in-laws Nirmala Gomez, Rienzie Machado, Sally Grero, Veronica and Irwin Vaz, Lawrence and Roshan Machado, Fortuna and Victor Benjamin, nephew Neil Gomez, nieces Ronala, Renata, Rhazyl and Redinka, grandnephews and grandnieces. He is also mourned by his cousins, relatives, and friends across Australia and the world.

To say Max had faith would be an understatement. He breathed and lived it, sharing generously without counting the cost.

Max, who loved travelling in Australia, Sri Lanka and around the world, studied at St Joseph’s College, Colombo, before doing his ALs at St Peter’s College. He worked in Sri Lanka before moving to England to study nursing, and then migrating to Australia. Max had the ability to thrive wherever he was, overcoming challenges while taking care of his family in Melbourne, then Bendigo, before returning to Melbourne.
Max loved sports and played squash, tennis, and badminton regularly, making many friends along the way. That was the type of person Max was, easily making people feel welcome as he was inclusive and respectful of everyone.

He and Belinda’s home was always welcoming, and they were the gracious hosts for so many family gatherings over the years, while their annual Christmas carols were something many of us looked forward to.
Max will be missed by all of us who were blessed to know him.

May the Holy Angels welcome our beloved Max into Heaven.

For as 2 Timothy 4:7 says:  “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

And Jesus says in Matthew 25: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Max will be farewelled on Tuesday, September 1.
