Italian Exodus and it’s Consequences – By GEORGE BRAINE My village, Boralessa, is only 40 km from Colombo. Starting with my paternal grandmother, our family has resided at Boralessa for well over a century. My modest ancestral property, “Pondside,” was previously owned by my grandmother, an uncle, and an aunt. It has been mine for nearly fifty years. Most probably, I’ll be the last Braine to live there. Over the years, as the population grew, the large coconut plantations that surrounded the village were divided and sub-divided for distribution among landless villagers. Gradually, these plots have been reduced to only 10 perches. However, Bishop Vianney encountered an unprecedented ...

Sri Lankan Chaplain completes first year in Sydney – Catholic Chaplain Fr. Ruwan Pradeep Source: LanCatholic – Quarterly Newsletter of the Sri Lankan New South Wales Catholic Association Volume 1 Issue 1 August 2020 Sri Lankan Catholic Chaplain Fr. Ruwan Pradeep completed one year of his term in July. His first year has been ‘hijacked’ by the COVID-19 pandemic which unfortunately impacted upon the most important period of the Catholic liturgical year when the Sri Lankan Catholic Community would have seen Fr. Ruwan celebrate his first Lent and Easter with them. The usual Palm Sunday outdoor Way of the Cross had to be cancelled as well as the other Easter Triduum services. However this was no impediment to Fr. Ruwan stepping up to the challenge of moving up the technology scale to provide his ministry online. He was open to the SLNSWCA initiative to participate in prayer meetings and deliver ...
