The Miraculous Journey of the Canada Sri Lanka Catholic Association of Ontario (CSLCAO) – by Kingsley LaBrooy

In 2012, the Canada Sri Lanka Catholic Association of Ontario (CSLCAO) was formed with the aim of bringing together the Sri Lankan Catholic community residing in Ontario. The organization’s inaugural event, a mass celebrated by Rt Rev Dr. Joseph Vianney Fernando, the Bishop of Kandy, held in Midland, Ontario, marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. This article delves into the impact of Bishop Vianney’s first mass, a personal miracle, and the subsequent growth of the CSLCAO.

One of the most remarkable moments during Bishop Vianney’s visit to Canada was a personal miracle that profoundly impacted me. It all began when I embarked on a trip to Sri Lanka, unknowingly carrying my son’s passport with me. My son was scheduled to join me a few days later. However, Bishop Vianney encountered an unprecedented delay in receiving his visa to Canada, which forced him to seek assistance through the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See and appeal to the Canadian embassy.

Meanwhile, as I went through my belongings, I stumbled upon my son’s passport tucked away in the hand luggage. Astonishingly, on the very same day, Bishop Vianney’s visa to Canada was granted. This prompted me to contact the bishop, who offered to return the passport to Canada. Bishop Vianney strongly believed that the delay in his visa was somehow connected to the accidental possession of my son’s passport. He stated that he had travelled the world over and never did he encounter any visa delays. This extraordinary event deepened the bond with Bishop Vianney, leaving an indelible mark on our faith.

Bishop Vianney’s first mass in Midland was pivotal in bringing together the diverse Sri Lankan communities residing in Ontario. The mass was celebrated in English, Sinhalese, and Tamil, showcasing the inclusivity and cultural richness of the CSLCAO. It served as a unique platform for people to gather, transcending linguistic and cultural barriers. The event symbolized unity, promoting peace and harmony within the community.

Sustaining the Spirit of Togetherness: Over the years, the CSLCAO has been actively involved in organizing various events and services, with the participation of esteemed Bishops and priests. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization adapted by holding virtual services, ensuring the spirit of togetherness remained alive. It is important for the community to recognize the ongoing efforts and sacrifices made by the organization and provide them with unwavering support.

The visit of Rt Rev Bishop Harold Anthony Perera brought about significant developments for the CSLCAO. An appeal was made to the Archdiocese of Toronto, leading to an annual fundraising campaign to support the diocese of Sri Lanka. This connection also facilitated the arrival of a priest fluent in English, Sinhalese, and Tamil. This was especially valuable for the elderly Sri Lankan community members who could only communicate in Sinhalese, enabling them to make their confessions comfortably. The visit of Bishop Harold Anthony Perera not only strengthened ties between the CSLCAO and the diocese of Sri Lanka but also addressed the linguistic needs of the community, ensuring inclusivity and spiritual support for all.

Honouring God and Fostering Growth: As the CSLCAO continues to grow, it is crucial to keep the main focus on honouring God and fulfilling His mission. While talents and abilities play a significant role, they should be secondary to the primary purpose of worship and devotion. Supporting the organization entails actively participating in its activities and events and extending invitations to non-Catholic friends to experience the joy and camaraderie found in the celebrations.

The Canada Sri Lanka Catholic Association of Ontario (CSLCAO) journey has been marked by remarkable moments, personal miracles, and a commitment to unity and inclusivity. From Bishop Vianney’s first mass in Midland to the sustained efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, the CSLCAO has remained dedicated to fostering a sense of togetherness within the Sri Lankan Catholic community.

The impact of Bishop Vianney’s personal miracle, where the accidental possession of a son’s passport coincided with granting his visa, deepened the bond between the community and the Bishop. It served as a testament to the power of faith and divine intervention. Moreover, Bishop Vianney’s visit brought different Sri Lankan communities together, transcending language barriers by conducting mass in English, Sinhalese, and Tamil.

The CSLCAO’s growth has been further supported through the appeal made to the Archdiocese of Toronto, establishing an annual fundraising campaign for the Diocese of Sri Lanka. Additionally, the arrival of a priest fluent in multiple languages catered to the needs of the elderly community members who could only communicate in Sinhalese, ensuring they could participate fully in their confessions.

Continuing to honour God and supporting the CSLCAO’s growth is essential. By actively participating in events, extending invitations to non-Catholic friends, and providing unwavering support, the CSLCAO can continue fostering a sense of unity, peace, and harmony within the community. The miraculous journey of the CSLCAO serves as an inspiration, highlighting the strength of faith and the power of coming together.
