Traditional Sri Lankan dish “Pittu” – By Nadeeka – eLanka

pittu

Sri Lankan pittu is a traditional Sri Lankan dish made from a mixture of rice flour and grated coconut, shaped into small cylinders and steamed. The mixture is usually seasoned with salt and sometimes with spices like cumin or black pepper. Pittu is often served with curries or coconut sambol, a spicy condiment made from grated coconut, chili, and lime juice.

Here’s a recipe for making Sri Lankan pittu:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of rice flour
  • 1 cup of grated coconut
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups of water

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the rice flour and grated coconut. Mix well.
  2. Add the salt to the mixture and stir until well-combined.
  3. Gradually add the water to the mixture, stirring continuously, until the mixture becomes moist and crumbly. You should be able to form the mixture into a ball with your hand.
  4. Fill a pittu steamer pot with water and bring it to a boil.
  5. Fill the cylindrical portion of the pittu steamer pot with alternating layers of the rice flour mixture and grated coconut, starting and ending with the rice flour mixture. Make sure to press down each layer with your fingers.
  6. Place the cylindrical portion on top of the steamer pot and cover it with a lid. Steam for about 10-15 minutes, or until the pittu is cooked and has a fluffy texture.
  7. Remove the cylindrical portion from the steamer pot and gently push out the pittu onto a plate.
  8. Serve the pittu hot with your favorite Sri Lankan curries or sambols.

Enjoy your homemade Sri Lankan pittu!
