Pidurangala Rock: A Hidden Gem in Sri Lanka – By Nadeeka – eLanka

Pidurangala Rock is indeed a hidden gem located in Sri Lanka. It is a majestic rock formation situated just a few kilometers north of the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the central part of the country. While Sigiriya tends to attract most of the attention from tourists, Pidurangala offers a unique and off-the-beaten-path experience for those who are looking for something different.

Climbing Pidurangala Rock provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Sigiriya Rock Fortress itself. The rock is relatively easier to climb compared to Sigiriya, although there are some steep and uneven sections, so it’s important to wear appropriate footwear and be cautious during the ascent.

At the top of Pidurangala Rock, you’ll find a historic Buddhist monastery dating back to the 5th century. The monastery consists of ancient ruins, including a reclining Buddha statue carved into the rock and several meditation caves. The serene atmosphere and cultural significance make Pidurangala an intriguing destination for both nature lovers and history enthusiasts.

One of the highlights of Pidurangala is the breathtaking sunrise and sunset views it offers. Many visitors prefer to climb the rock early in the morning to witness the golden hues of the sunrise painting the landscape, while others opt for the evening to capture the vibrant colors of the sunset. Regardless of the time you choose, the views from the top are truly mesmerizing.
