Amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, a group of Palestinians faced a tumultuous journey to safety after their visas to Australia were suddenly canceled last week. However, they have now been permitted to continue their trip to Australia.

After further security checks, some of the visa cancelations were reversed. However, advocates are pressing the government for more transparency about vetting procedures to secure other Palestinians holding Australian visas who are trying to escape the unrest in Gaza, VisaGuide.World reports.

Eight Palestinians’ Australian Visas Reinstated

Rasha Abbas, the executive director of Palestine Australia Relief and Action (PARA), revealed on Monday that eight of the 11 Palestinians her organization was helping, eight had their Australian visas reinstated after an unexpected cancellation.

Since the October 7 terrorist attacks, over 2,200 visas have been issued to Palestinians, alongside 2,400 visas to Israelis. Most Palestinian visas are temporary, giving holders rights similar to those of tourists visiting Australia for a limited duration.

According to the Australian federal government, visa cancellations occurred in cases where individuals left Gaza “without explanation” about their means of escape or if other circumstances had changed. In some cases, cancellation letters cited a determination that the individuals “never intended” to reside temporarily in Australia.

Australian Refugee Council Urges Ministers for Action Regarding Gaza Visa Cancellations

Today, the Refugee Council of Australia issued a letter to the Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon. Clare O’Neil MP, and the Minister for Immigration, the Hon. Andrew Giles MP. This letter explains severe concerns about the cancellation of visas for Palestinians from Gaza. It also provides proposed solutions for government consideration.

The individuals whose visas have been canceled have been left in dire circumstances. Families and individuals, having already left Gaza, now find themselves without legal rights or protection in Egypt or in transit in airports en route to Australia.

The Refugee Council of Australia

The Refugee Council of Australia further said that if cancellations are due to security assessments or individual circumstances, those reasons should be clearly stated, adding that individuals affected by such cancellations have the right to challenge them.

In addition, the Council raised concerns about the widespread publicity surrounding these visa cancellations, fueling fear among other Australian visa holders.

The same authority further emphasized that the visas offered to those fleeing the conflict in Gaza and Israel are not suitable for their needs. Historically, subclass 600 visas have not been used to facilitate travel for individuals directly affected by conflict, unlike the case of the Ukraine war in 2022.

While acknowledging the government’s willingness to allow temporary entry during crises, the Consulate pointed out that visitor visas were not intended for this purpose. There is a risk of visa cancellation due to needing to meet the criteria. Individuals should be allowed to apply for more important visas, such as the Subclass 449 Humanitarian Resident Visa, in urgent situations.
