Whether it’s a glass of overnight-soaked chia water or a tablespoon of flax seeds in your morning smoothie, seed mucilages have found their way into modern wellness routines. In a recent study, scientists unveiled the remarkable prebiotic potential of mucilages seeds like chia, fenugreek, basil, mustard, and flaxseed.

Using in vitro fecal fermentation models with samples from adults and toddlers, researchers showed that these seed mucilages remain indigestible to human enzymes (as confirmed by α-amylase resistance), but are readily fermented by gut microbes, boosting the growth of key probiotics like .

Despite no major changes in overall diversity, seed mucilages enhanced specific beneficial microbes like 3007, , and , while reducing harmful taxa like – and , linked to inflammation and gut disorders.

Mustard mucilage alone consistently enhanced across both age groups, a rare and valuable trait for infant gut support.

Beyond composition, functional microbiome pathways improved too:

  • Basil and chia boosted pathways for SCFA production and amino acid biosynthesis.
  • Fenugreek enhanced nitrate reduction (key for microbial energy metabolism).
  • Flaxseed activated vitamin B12 and B7 synthesis.
  • Mustard drove production of L-arginine and L-methionine, vital for gut lining repair and immune function.
