The Sri Lankan New Year celebrations hosted by the Sri Lanka Society of QLD, held at Belmont Service Bowls Club in Carina on 26 April 2025, was a fun-filled family eventfeaturing many Aluth Avurudu traditions. The celebrations began with the lamp being lit by the president, Mr. Chamitha Weerasinghe and the past president, Mrs Hermin Goonetilleke. This was followed by the age-old tradition of eating Kiribath as a community, to the accompaniment of the Rabana, played by two groups of talented children.
The tastefully presented ‘rasakavili’ table filled with an incredible array of mouthwatering traditional sweets and the delicious dinner provided by Negombo Caterers delighted and satisfied the gastronomic appetite of the guests. The fun-filled Aluth Avurudu games caused much laughter while the beautiful dances by the children showcased our rich heritage. The Batik fashion show by Phoenix Boutique added glamour and the sing-aalong featuring many olden favourites ‘orchestrated’ by the secretary of SLSQ, Mr. Chamila Ellawela, who took on the role of singer and DJ for the evening, assisted by a trio of talented singers and musicians completed the evening. It was a vibrant, joyful event that brought together community spirit, tradition and nostalgia in the most heartwarming way.
