Sri Lankan cuisine is rich with traditional sweets that carry both cultural and nostalgic value. Among them, Aluwa stands out as one of the most beloved homemade treats, especially during festive occasions like Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Avurudu). This delicious sweet is known for its soft, melt-in-the-mouth texture and aromatic flavor, made with just a few simple ingredients.

If you’re looking for an easy and authentic Sri Lankan sweet to try at home, Aluwa is the perfect choice.

What is Aluwa?

Aluwa is a traditional Sri Lankan sweet made primarily from rice flour, treacle (or sugar), and spices like cardamom. It has a slightly crumbly yet smooth texture and is often shaped into diamond or square pieces.

There are different varieties of Aluwa, including:

  • Plain Aluwa
  • Cashew Aluwa
  • Milk Aluwa
  • Pandan (rampe) flavored Aluwa

Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make simple Aluwa:

  • 2 cups rice flour
  • 1 cup kithul treacle (or substitute with sugar syrup)
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • Optional: chopped cashew nuts

Step-by-Step Recipe

1. Roast the Rice Flour

  • Heat a pan on low flame
  • Add the rice flour and roast it gently
  • Stir continuously until it turns slightly off-white and aromatic
  • Do not let it brown

👉 This step is very important for the texture

2. Prepare the Syrup

  • In another pan, add treacle (or sugar with a little water)
  • Heat until it becomes slightly thick (sticky consistency)
  • Mix well

3. Combine Ingredients

  • Add roasted rice flour gradually into the syrup
  • Mix continuously to avoid lumps
  • Add cardamom powder and salt
  • If using cashews, add them now

👉 The mixture should become thick and dough-like

4. Shape the Aluwa

  • Remove from heat
  • Transfer mixture onto a greased tray or flat surface
  • Flatten using a rolling pin
  • Cut into diamond or square shapes while still warm

5. Cool and Serve

  • Allow it to cool completely
  • Once set, separate the pieces

👉 Your delicious homemade Aluwa is ready!

Tips for Perfect Aluwa

  • Always roast the flour well for the best taste
  • Do not overcook the syrup—it can make the mixture too hard
  • Work quickly when shaping, as the mixture hardens fast
  • Use kithul treacle for authentic Sri Lankan flavor

Why Aluwa is Special

Aluwa is more than just a sweet—it represents tradition, celebration, and family bonding. It is commonly prepared during Avurudu and shared among loved ones, symbolizing joy and togetherness.

Conclusion

Making Sri Lankan Aluwa at home is simple, affordable, and incredibly rewarding. With just a few ingredients and easy steps, you can enjoy a traditional sweet that has been loved for generations.

Whether for a festival or just a treat with tea, Aluwa is a perfect choice that brings a taste of Sri Lankan heritage to your table.
