An evening of pageantry, cultural expression and international fellowship was presented at Ramadia Grand in Moratuwa, where the Global Sri Lankan Kumara Kumariya 2026 pageant brought together contestants from 13 countries and demonstrated the enduring connections linking Sri Lankans at home with communities established across the world.

The event culminated in the crowning of Kulan Dissanayake of Australia and Sinadhi Liyanage of France as the new Global Sri Lankan Kumara and Kumariya titleholders. Their success provided a particularly meaningful dimension to an occasion designed not merely to celebrate elegance and presentation, but also to recognise the cultural confidence, talent and shared identity of Sri Lankan participants from different national settings.

A global platform for Sri Lankan heritage

Although pageants are often associated primarily with appearance and stage presentation, the Global Sri Lankan Kumara Kumariya programme has been positioned as a broader cultural platform, through which Sri Lankan traditions, values and artistic identity can be introduced to an international audience.

Contestants representing different countries brought varied personal experiences to the stage, yet the event was structured around a common heritage. This combination of international participation and cultural continuity created an atmosphere in which Sri Lankan identity was presented as both deeply rooted and capable of flourishing in contemporary global settings.

Founder and International Director Wasanthi Gunaratne said that contestants from 13 countries had taken part, reflecting the growing international stature of the pageant and its commitment to maintaining high standards of competition. The participation was also described as evidence of the strong interest among Sri Lankans living overseas in initiatives that provide a connection with the country’s traditions and cultural life.

For younger Sri Lankans abroad, events of this kind can serve an instrumental purpose. They provide a visible setting in which cultural knowledge is not treated as a relic of the past, but as a living inheritance that can be expressed through confidence, performance, fashion, language and public engagement.

Australia and France represented among the winners

The victories of Kulan Dissanayake from Australia and Sinadhi Liyanage from France underscored the international character of the competition. Their achievements also reflected the increasingly prominent role played by Sri Lankan communities outside the island in cultural, professional and social initiatives connected to Sri Lanka.

Australia and France have long been home to Sri Lankan families, professionals, students and community organisations, many of which continue to conduct cultural programmes, support charitable activities and maintain links with Sri Lankan institutions. The representation of both countries among the winning contestants therefore carried significance beyond the pageant itself.

The titleholders’ success demonstrated how international Sri Lankan events can create opportunities for participants to represent both their adopted countries and their ancestral heritage. Such occasions can encourage young people to engage with traditions in a confident and contemporary manner, while also allowing audiences in Sri Lanka to appreciate the achievements of Sri Lankans living overseas.

The pageant’s international format further indicated that cultural participation is no longer confined to geographical boundaries. Through travel, digital communication and community networks, Sri Lankan traditions are now being shared across a broad international landscape, with events in Sri Lanka acting as important meeting points for people connected by heritage.

Culture, presentation and artistic expression

The programme at Ramadia Grand was presented as an occasion of glamour and cultural celebration, with contestants appearing in formal and traditional attire while taking part in a carefully staged international competition. Cultural symbolism was visible throughout the event, from traditional dress and ceremonial presentation to the artistic elements that accompanied the pageant.

Such programmes can make heritage accessible to wider audiences because they combine visual appeal with historical and cultural references. Traditional clothing, ornamentation, performance and ceremonial customs become part of a contemporary public presentation, allowing younger generations to encounter familiar traditions in a modern setting.

The approach is particularly relevant for Sri Lankans raised outside the country, for whom cultural identity may be expressed through a combination of family traditions, community events and international programmes. A pageant that brings together participants from several countries can therefore operate as a cultural bridge, strengthening relationships between Sri Lanka and its global community.

The event also highlighted the potential for carefully organised cultural programmes to support tourism promotion. When international contestants, guests and community representatives gather in Sri Lanka, the occasion offers an opportunity to present the country’s hospitality, history, landscapes and traditions to a wider audience.

Sponsorship with a wider purpose

The principal sponsor of the event was Kandy Spices Agro (Pvt) Ltd, associated with the Kandy Group of Companies. Dr. Ruwan Herath, Chairman and Managing Director of the Kandy Group of Companies and the entrepreneur behind Kandy Spices Agro (Pvt) Ltd, described the pageant as an important initiative for showcasing Sri Lanka’s heritage, culture and tourism potential.

Having established his business in the United Arab Emirates over the past decade, Dr. Herath stated that the sponsorship represented an opportunity to give something meaningful back to Sri Lanka. His comments reflected the important role that Sri Lankan entrepreneurs abroad can play in supporting cultural initiatives and strengthening connections between business, community development and national promotion.

Tourism was identified as an industry capable of generating valuable foreign exchange while supporting livelihoods in communities across the country. By linking an internationally attended pageant with the promotion of Sri Lankan culture and tourism, the event illustrated how private-sector support can contribute to a broader national narrative.

The connection between cultural events and business sponsorship is also relevant to Sri Lankan organisations in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and other countries, where community programmes frequently depend on the involvement of businesses and professional networks. When sponsorship is aligned with cultural and social objectives, it can provide benefits for organisers, participants, audiences and the wider community.

Ramadia’s role as an international venue

The selection of Ramadia Grand in Moratuwa as the venue added another important dimension to the occasion. Rohan Fernando, Chairman of Ramadia, which comprises Ramadia Ranmal Holiday Resort and Ramadia Grand Hotel in Moratuwa, as well as the parent Rodesha Group, said that hosting the pageant reinforced the hotel’s reputation as a venue for global events, conferences and hospitality.

The successful staging of an international pageant requires suitable facilities, event coordination, presentation areas and hospitality services. Ramadia’s involvement demonstrated the capacity of Sri Lankan venues to host programmes that attract international participants and require a high level of organisation.

For Moratuwa, an established urban centre within the Colombo metropolitan region, the event also provided an opportunity to welcome visitors and showcase the city’s growing hospitality infrastructure. International cultural programmes held outside traditional tourist locations can help broaden the public image of Sri Lanka, demonstrating that the country possesses a range of venues capable of accommodating significant global gatherings.

A continuing connection across generations

The Global Sri Lankan Kumara Kumariya 2026 pageant offered a positive example of how cultural events can unite Sri Lankans across borders while creating opportunities for young people to participate in an international setting. Its significance rested not only in the announcement of the winners, but also in the relationships formed among contestants, organisers, sponsors, venues and audiences.

Sri Lankan communities around the world continue to contribute to the preservation and development of cultural traditions through festivals, religious observances, educational initiatives, arts programmes and professional networks. Pageants such as this one form part of that wider cultural ecosystem, presenting heritage through a format that is accessible, contemporary and internationally visible.

The participation of contestants from Australia, France and 11 other countries indicated the continuing strength of these global connections. With thoughtful organisation and sustained support, similar initiatives could develop further, incorporating educational components, tourism promotion, charitable partnerships and opportunities for young Sri Lankans to build professional and cultural networks.

The pageant at Ramadia Grand consequently represented more than a single evening of competition. It was a celebration of Sri Lankan identity in its international form, bringing together local talent and Sri Lankans abroad while demonstrating that heritage remains a powerful and unifying force across generations and geography.
