Sri Lankan para-athlete Palitha Bandara has established a remarkable place in the country’s sporting history after winning silver medals at two consecutive Commonwealth Games, a distinction that reflects not only his exceptional ability in the throwing circle but also the discipline, resilience and steadfast ambition that have shaped his international career.

Bandara’s latest achievement was secured at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he produced a personal-best throw of 46.84 metres in the men’s discus throw F42–44/F61–64 event. The performance placed him second in the final, behind Wales’ Aled Davies, while Trinidad and Tobago’s Akeem Stewart claimed the bronze medal.

The result delivered Sri Lanka’s first medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games and confirmed Bandara as the only Sri Lankan para-athlete to have won silver at two consecutive editions of the Games. His latest success followed his silver-medal performance at Birmingham 2022, where he recorded a distance of 44.20 metres in the same discus event.

A record built through consistency

International sporting success is rarely defined by one outstanding performance alone. It is more often built through repeated preparation, the management of pressure and the ability to reproduce a high standard when the occasion demands it. Bandara’s two Commonwealth silver medals therefore carry significance beyond the podium, as they demonstrate a sustained capacity to compete successfully against leading para-athletes from across the Commonwealth.

His Birmingham achievement in 2022 was already historic, as it represented Sri Lanka’s first para-sport medal at a Commonwealth Games. Four years later, the Glasgow result transformed that breakthrough into a continuing legacy. The 46.84-metre throw, which also marked a new personal best, indicated that Bandara’s career remains on an upward trajectory rather than being defined solely by past accomplishments.

The progression from 44.20 metres in Birmingham to 46.84 metres in Glasgow illustrates the value of patient development, technical refinement and competitive experience. Each metre gained represents countless hours of training, physical conditioning and mental preparation, while each international appearance provides another opportunity to strengthen performance under the intense scrutiny of elite sport.

For Sri Lanka, the achievement has offered a powerful moment of national pride. The Sri Lankan flag was once again carried onto an international podium by an athlete whose journey has become closely associated with perseverance and professional commitment.

A journey shaped by determination

Bandara’s story has been influenced by the support of the Sri Lanka Army and the Sri Lanka National Guard, institutions to which he has attributed an important role in his development as an athlete. His reflections, as reported by News First, convey a deep sense of gratitude towards the organisations and individuals who helped create the conditions in which his sporting potential could be developed.

His coach, Prabath Danushka Perera, has also been identified as a significant influence. A former national medallist in throwing events, Perera has supported Bandara’s preparation and progression, helping him to strengthen the technical and competitive elements required in discus and shot put.

Behind the public celebration of each medal lies a demanding routine that is seldom visible to spectators. Throwing events require carefully coordinated movement, balance, strength and timing, while para-athletes must also adapt their preparation to the specific physical requirements of their classification. The ability to remain focused through setbacks and to continue improving over several years is instrumental to achieving success at Commonwealth and Paralympic level.

Bandara’s career demonstrates that sporting resilience is not simply a matter of enduring difficulty. It involves turning preparation into confidence, confidence into performance and performance into a platform for further progress.

The Paralympic medal that remains the goal

Although two Commonwealth Games silver medals have already secured Bandara’s place among Sri Lanka’s most accomplished para-athletes, one major ambition remains unfulfilled: a medal at the Paralympic Games.

Speaking to News First, Bandara identified a Paralympic medal as the principal achievement still missing from his career and expressed his hope of bringing that medal to Sri Lanka in the shot put event at the 2028 Paralympic Games. The ambition is both personal and national, because a Paralympic podium would represent the highest achievement of his career while also creating a significant milestone for Sri Lankan para-sport.

The Paralympic stage presents a formidable challenge, bringing together the world’s most accomplished athletes and demanding exceptional preparation over a long qualification cycle. Bandara’s two Commonwealth medals, however, provide evidence that he possesses the experience and competitive temperament required to perform at major international competitions.

His next objective will require continued attention to strength, technique, recovery and competition planning, supported by effective coaching and appropriate institutional assistance. The pathway towards 2028 will also depend upon access to high-quality training facilities, international exposure and the resources required for elite para-athletics.

Looking beyond silver

Bandara has also spoken about the possibility of pursuing further success at the 2030 Commonwealth Games in India, where the climatic conditions are expected to be similar to those experienced in Sri Lanka. Such familiarity may provide a useful advantage, although the more immediate focus remains the pursuit of a Paralympic medal.

The prospect of converting Commonwealth silver into gold in the future adds another dimension to Bandara’s ambitions. Yet the significance of his career does not depend solely on whether the colour of his medal changes. His achievements have already expanded the possibilities imagined for Sri Lankan para-athletes, demonstrating that consistent international podium finishes can be achieved through commitment, support and long-term planning.

His example may encourage greater recognition of para-sport within Sri Lanka, including stronger development programmes for emerging athletes, better access to specialised coaching and more consistent support for competitors preparing for international championships. The country possesses considerable athletic talent, but that talent can reach its full potential only when the necessary sporting structures are sustained over time.

Bandara’s success consequently carries a broader message. It shows that para-athletes should be regarded not merely as participants in sporting events, but as high-performance competitors whose preparation, achievements and ambitions deserve the same respect afforded to every elite athlete.

A source of pride for Sri Lankans worldwide

From Sri Lanka to Sri Lankan communities across Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and beyond, Bandara’s achievement offers a story of courage and accomplishment that resonates across borders. His medals provide a shared moment of celebration for people who continue to follow Sri Lankan sport and take pride in the achievements of Sri Lankan athletes on the international stage.

Palitha Bandara now stands at an important stage of his career. Two Commonwealth silver medals have already been won, a personal best has been recorded and a historic sporting record has been established. The next chapter will be shaped by preparation for the Paralympic challenge, with the possibility of an even greater achievement awaiting him in 2028.

For Sri Lanka’s sporting community, his journey remains a compelling reminder that progress is often achieved one determined effort at a time. The silver medals are historic, but Bandara’s ambition makes clear that the most significant throw of his career may still lie ahead.
