Councillor Sylvia Alafaci Elected Deputy Mayor of the City of Canada Bay

Councillor Sylvia Alafaci has been elected Deputy Mayor of the City of Canada Bay, marking a significant milestone in her public service and community leadership.

The election took place at the public Council Meeting held on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, at the Canada Bay Civic Centre in Drummoyne, New South Wales.

Councillor Alafaci’s appointment to the position of Deputy Mayor represents an important new chapter in her contribution to the City of Canada Bay and reflects her continuing commitment to serving residents, supporting local communities and contributing to the future of one of Sydney’s most diverse local government areas.

First elected to the City of Canada Bay Council in 2024, Councillor Alafaci has since been actively involved in representing residents and participating in matters affecting the local government area. Her role has enabled her to engage closely with the community and contribute to discussions concerning local priorities, community needs and ongoing development.

The City of Canada Bay is home to a highly diverse population and encompasses a number of established and growing communities. Against this background, Councillor Alafaci’s longstanding involvement in multicultural, community and business engagement has been an important feature of her public and civic work.

In addition to her responsibilities on Council, Councillor Alafaci has built an extensive record of engagement with business leaders, community representatives and members of the diplomatic corps.

She is Secretary of the Australian Business Summit Council Inc. (ABSC Inc.), a not-for-profit organisation that promotes engagement between the Australian and international business communities and provides opportunities for business, diplomatic and community leaders to build stronger professional relationships.

Through her work with the Australian Business Summit Council Inc., Councillor Alafaci has participated in and helped facilitate initiatives that bring together representatives from business, government, community organisations and the diplomatic community.

She is also a co-founder of EKONOMOS, a business affairs magazine that provides a platform for contributions and perspectives from leaders in business, academia, diplomacy and the wider community.

Her involvement in these initiatives has enabled her to develop broad networks across Australia’s business and multicultural communities and has reinforced her longstanding commitment to encouraging dialogue, cooperation and stronger connections between people from different professional and cultural backgrounds.

Councillor Alafaci’s community contribution has also included service through Rotary and engagement with a wide range of multicultural communities.

These experiences have complemented her work in local government and have helped shape her approach to public service — one centred on community engagement, cooperation and the importance of building constructive relationships.

Her election as Deputy Mayor now provides a further opportunity to contribute to the leadership of the City of Canada Bay.

In the role, Councillor Alafaci will continue to work alongside the Mayor, fellow Councillors and Council staff while representing the interests of residents across the local government area.

The appointment also recognises the growing responsibilities she has undertaken since being elected to Council and the broader contribution she has made through community, business and multicultural engagement.
