Sri Lanka’s women’s cricket team has secured a place in the gold medal match of the 2026 Asian Games after defeating Pakistan by eight wickets at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Sunday, 20 September, in a commanding semi-final performance shaped by captain Chamari Athapaththu’s unbeaten 83.

The victory has placed Sri Lanka one step away from an Asian Games title, while also providing another compelling demonstration of the country’s growing excellence in women’s cricket. Sri Lanka will meet India in the final on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, after India defeated Bangladesh in the second semi-final.

For Sri Lankan supporters in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and elsewhere, the result has created a renewed sense of anticipation around a team that continues to combine experience, composure and attacking ability on the international stage.

Athapaththu leads a decisive chase

Sri Lanka’s successful pursuit was led by Athapaththu, whose 83 not out from 50 deliveries provided the principal foundation for the eight-wicket victory. The left-handed captain struck seven fours and six sixes, producing an innings that was both technically assured and strategically forceful as the chase gathered momentum.

Pakistan had posted 177 for four from its 20 overs, with half-centuries from Shawaal Zulfiqar and Ayesha Zafar giving the side a substantial total after it lost the toss and was sent in to bat. Sri Lanka consequently faced a demanding chase, described by Sportstar as a 179-run target, although corroborating match reports recorded Pakistan’s final score as 177 for four and Sri Lanka’s winning total as 178 for two.

Sri Lanka completed the chase in 17.5 overs, leaving 13 deliveries unused and demonstrating the authority of its batting response. The margin of victory, together with the remaining deliveries, underlined the efficiency of the pursuit rather than merely its successful conclusion.

Pakistan builds a competitive platform

Pakistan’s innings was initially unsettled when its opening batter Gull Feroza was dismissed with the first delivery, but the setback was absorbed through a substantial third-wicket partnership between Shawaal Zulfiqar and Ayesha Zafar.

The pair added 115 runs, which was reported as the second-biggest partnership for Pakistan in women’s Twenty20 internationals. Zulfiqar contributed a composed fifty, while Zafar produced the most substantial individual score of the innings with 71 from 40 deliveries, including nine fours and two sixes.

Their partnership restored Pakistan’s batting rhythm and enabled the team to finish with a total that appeared capable of testing Sri Lanka. The innings therefore presented Sri Lanka with a meaningful examination of its bowling discipline and batting depth, rather than a straightforward passage into the final.

The response, however, remained measured. Sri Lanka’s bowlers prevented Pakistan from converting its strong middle-innings partnership into an even larger total, and the batters subsequently ensured that the pressure created by the target was removed with considerable authority.

Dulani and Perera provide the platform

Sri Lanka’s chase began positively through opener Imesha Dulani, who contributed 26 from 21 deliveries before Pakistan captain Fatima Sana made the first breakthrough. The dismissal offered Pakistan a potential opening, but it did not interrupt Sri Lanka’s broader control of the innings.

Hasini Perera then played an important supporting role alongside Athapaththu. The pair added 95 runs for the second wicket, creating the central partnership of the chase and steadily reducing the required total.

Perera was dismissed close to the finishing line, having made 42, but the situation had already been transformed by the partnership. Athapaththu remained unbeaten, while Harshitha Samarawickrama finished on 17 not out, ensuring that Sri Lanka crossed the line without further difficulty.

The sequence reflected a balanced batting structure: Dulani supplied early momentum, Perera stabilised the middle phase, and Athapaththu converted the advantage into a decisive victory. Such progression is instrumental in tournament cricket, where a team must be capable of adapting to changing match conditions rather than relying on one method of scoring.

A captain’s performance of considerable significance

Athapaththu’s innings was important not only because of its statistical value, but also because it demonstrated the influence of experienced leadership during a high-pressure knockout match.

As captain and senior batter, she was required to assess the conditions, respond to Pakistan’s bowling plans and maintain the correct tempo throughout the chase. The innings achieved that balance, combining controlled stroke play with the boundary-hitting power necessary to prevent the required rate from becoming a concern.

Her performance also forms part of a broader Asian Games campaign in which she has repeatedly provided decisive contributions. In the quarter-final against Malaysia, Sri Lanka won by 86 runs, while Athapaththu marked her 300th international appearance during the match. She also played a central role in that victory, reinforcing her status as one of the most experienced and influential figures in Sri Lankan women’s cricket.

The captain’s continuing impact has helped create an important bridge between established international experience and the next generation of Sri Lankan players. Athapaththu’s example demonstrates how leadership can extend beyond tactical decisions, encompassing preparation, resilience and the ability to establish calm during moments when a team’s progress is being closely tested.

India awaits in the final

Sri Lanka will now face India in the Asian Games women’s cricket gold medal match on 22 September. India secured its place by defeating Bangladesh in the second semi-final, setting up a final between two prominent teams in Asian women’s cricket.

The encounter will carry significance beyond the medal itself. Sri Lanka’s progress has affirmed its capacity to compete effectively in a major multi-sport event, while India’s presence ensures that the final will feature two sides with considerable experience, depth and public support.

For the global Sri Lankan community, the match will be an opportunity to celebrate a team that has already guaranteed at least a silver medal while remaining firmly focused on the possibility of gold. Families and supporters watching from Melbourne, Sydney, London, Toronto, Auckland, Los Angeles and other centres will follow the contest with particular interest, as the team seeks to conclude an impressive tournament campaign with its most significant achievement yet.

A positive moment for Sri Lankan women’s sport

Sri Lanka’s advancement to the final is another positive marker for the country’s women’s sporting movement, in which international performances have increasingly attracted recognition and encouraged wider participation.

The team’s success in Nisshin was built upon more than one outstanding innings. It emerged through the combined efforts of Dulani, Perera, Athapaththu, Samarawickrama and the bowling group, as well as through the discipline required to respond to Pakistan’s 115-run partnership.

That collective quality will be essential against India. The final will demand precision in the field, intelligent use of the powerplay and continued clarity from the top order, while the bowling unit will need to restrict India’s scoring options during the middle overs.

Whatever the final result, Sri Lanka’s performance against Pakistan has already offered a powerful example of ambition, preparation and composure. With Athapaththu leading from the front, the national women’s team has given Sri Lankan supporters around the world a moment of genuine sporting pride and a compelling reason to watch the gold medal match.
