The FL Foundation of Future Life Holdings (FLH Group) has launched the FLH Mapiya Kapakaru programme, a structured education-support initiative intended to help children from low-income families continue their schooling without interruption.

Reported by Hiru News Gold FM on 7 October 2026, the programme will initially cover the monthly educational expenses of 100 children for one year, while assistance may also be extended to healthcare and sports, depending on each child’s age and individual circumstances.

The initiative places practical support at the centre of its approach, recognising that a child’s ability to remain engaged in education can depend on several connected needs, including school-related expenses, health requirements, access to sporting activities and the wider stability of the household.

A foundation focused on children and women

The FL Foundation was established in 2018 to conduct social development initiatives focused on empowering children and women from low-income families.

Since its establishment, the Foundation has worked through a range of community-oriented programmes, including FLH Sathkaara, which has delivered support across many parts of Sri Lanka. According to the information reported by Hiru News, the Foundation has implemented 235 projects through the programme, providing assistance valued at more than Rs. 110 million and directly benefiting approximately 45,000 Sri Lankans.

That record provides an important context for the launch of FLH Mapiya Kapakaru. Rather than being presented as a single, isolated donation, the new programme forms part of a continuing social-development framework through which children and families can be connected with more consistent assistance.

Structured programmes of this kind can be particularly significant in communities where educational costs are distributed across several areas, including books, uniforms, transport, stationery, school activities and other requirements that may appear modest individually but become substantial when combined over an entire school year.

Support for 100 children in the first phase

Under the first phase of FLH Mapiya Kapakaru, the monthly educational expenses of 100 children will be covered for one year.

The programme is also designed to take account of the fact that children do not all face identical challenges. Support may therefore extend beyond education-related expenses to include healthcare and sports, with assistance determined according to the age and individual needs of each child.

This broader approach is valuable because education is influenced by a child’s overall welfare. A child who requires medical attention, for example, may face difficulty attending school regularly, while access to sport can contribute to physical development, confidence, teamwork and participation in school life.

The programme’s support model also places emphasis on continuity. A one-off donation can provide immediate relief, but assistance delivered over a defined period may offer families greater certainty and help children remain focused on their studies without repeated disruption.

Donors, together with a leading bank, have joined the initiative to support children in need. The involvement of institutional and individual supporters demonstrates how partnerships can strengthen programmes that are intended to deliver assistance in a planned and accountable manner.

Community leaders and schools can refer children

A notable feature of the FLH Mapiya Kapakaru programme is the use of established community referral pathways.

Children requiring assistance can be identified and referred through Grama Niladharis, religious leaders or school principals. These individuals are often closely connected to families and communities, allowing children in genuine need to be brought to the attention of the programme through recognised local channels.

School principals can help identify students whose educational participation may be affected by financial hardship, while Grama Niladharis and religious leaders can provide important community-level knowledge regarding household circumstances. Such referral arrangements can assist in directing support responsibly, while reducing the likelihood that children in need remain unseen.

The approach also acknowledges the importance of local trust. In many communities, schools, religious institutions and administrative officers serve as essential points of contact for families seeking assistance. Their involvement can help connect charitable resources with children in a manner that is more organised, respectful and responsive to local conditions.

An opportunity for sponsors to contribute

Individuals who wish to assist children can also join the programme as sponsors.

Further information about FLH Mapiya Kapakaru is available through www.sathkaara.lk. Information about FLH Sathkaara programmes is also made available through the Sathkaara website, the Sathkaara App, and the programme’s Facebook, Instagram and YouTube platforms.

For potential sponsors, the programme offers a direct way to contribute towards a child’s educational continuity while supporting a wider initiative that may also respond to healthcare and sporting needs. Readers considering participation are encouraged to obtain the latest information directly through the official Sathkaara channels, including details regarding the sponsorship process and eligibility arrangements.

The emphasis on sponsorship is also consistent with the Foundation’s wider objective of encouraging shared responsibility. Corporate organisations, community members and individual donors can each contribute in different ways, whether through financial support, professional expertise, educational materials or assistance with community outreach.

Further programmes planned

FLH Group has indicated that it plans to introduce further programmes through its establishments across Sri Lanka in the coming weeks and months.

The stated aim is to support the education, knowledge and overall well-being of thousands more children. If implemented effectively, such programmes could extend the reach of existing social-development work while addressing the different needs of children in urban, rural and regional communities.

The long-term value of initiatives such as FLH Mapiya Kapakaru will depend not only on the funds provided, but also on the quality of identification, referral, follow-up and communication. Clear processes involving community leaders and schools can help ensure that assistance reaches children who require it, while regular evaluation can help participating organisations understand which forms of support produce the greatest benefit.

For the children involved, however, the immediate significance is straightforward: assistance with educational expenses can help reduce pressure on families and enable students to remain connected to school. When that assistance is combined with consideration for health, sport and individual circumstances, the programme presents a more comprehensive understanding of children’s development.

The launch of FLH Mapiya Kapakaru therefore represents a positive addition to Sri Lanka’s community-support landscape. Through its first phase, the programme will assist 100 children for one year, while the Foundation’s established record and future plans indicate an ambition to extend practical support to many more families across the country.
