Sri Lankan school students have achieved a notable result at the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad in Indonesia, winning 13 medals, including three silver and ten bronze, during a competition that brought together young representatives from 23 countries.

The Sri Lankan team returned to the island on Wednesday, 7 October, arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake after competing in West Java between 2 and 6 October. The result provides an encouraging demonstration of the ability of Sri Lankan students to perform in demanding international academic environments, while also highlighting the value of systematic preparation, competitive selection and sustained support for mathematics and science education.

According to information reported by Newswire, with details provided by the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka was represented by 24 students. The team consisted of 12 students in the Mathematics category and 12 students in the Science category, allowing the country to participate across both disciplines with a balanced group of young competitors.

Mathematics and Science Teams Secure 13 Medals

The medal tally was distributed across the two categories.

Sri Lankan students competing in Mathematics secured:

  • Two silver medals
  • Six bronze medals

The Science team achieved:

  • One silver medal
  • Four bronze medals

Together, the two teams produced a total of three silver medals and ten bronze medals. Although the medal categories differed between the disciplines, the combined outcome represents a substantial achievement for a 24-member school delegation competing against representatives from 22 other countries.

International Olympiads are designed to test more than the ability to recall information. Students are expected to apply logical reasoning, numerical understanding, scientific principles and disciplined problem-solving skills, often under strict time limitations and within unfamiliar competitive settings. The performance of the Sri Lankan delegation therefore reflects not only individual ability, but also the preparation provided before the students travelled to Indonesia.

Selection Through a Structured National Process

The students who represented Sri Lanka were not selected through a single examination or informal nomination. The Ministry of Education stated that the selection process was conducted through a sequence of competitions at school, zonal, provincial and national levels.

Students first participated in competitions within their schools before progressing through the zonal and provincial stages. Those who achieved the highest marks at the national-level competition were subsequently selected to represent Sri Lanka at the international event.

The selected students then underwent formal training before travelling to Indonesia. This process provided an organised pathway through which talented students from different parts of the country could be identified, assessed and prepared for a competition of international standing.

The Ministry further stated that the students were nominated for the Olympiad through the Science and Mathematics Branches of its Education Quality Development Division. The involvement of these specialised branches indicates that the delegation formed part of a wider institutional effort to identify and develop students with strong potential in science and mathematics.

Full Airfare Support Provided for the First Time

A significant aspect of this year’s participation was the financial support provided by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.

For the first time, the Ministry covered the full cost of air tickets for all 24 participating students. The support removed a substantial financial barrier for the students and their families, ensuring that those selected through the national process could attend the competition without the cost of international travel preventing their participation.

Before departing for Indonesia on 2 October, the students met Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya at the Ministry of Education premises. The Prime Minister officially presented the air tickets to the students ahead of their departure.

This sponsorship was directly connected to the students’ participation in the competition and represented practical assistance for an education-related international activity. By supporting the travel costs of the full team, the Ministry enabled the students to compete as representatives of Sri Lanka while gaining experience in an international academic setting.

Encouragement for Students Across Sri Lanka

The achievement offers encouragement to students who are developing an interest in mathematics, science, research and analytical learning. It demonstrates that opportunities for international participation can emerge from a structured progression that begins at school level and advances through zonal, provincial and national competitions.

Such pathways are important because academic talent is not confined to one region, one school or one urban centre. A clearly defined selection process allows students with ability and determination to compete for recognition through their knowledge and performance. It also gives schools and teachers a practical framework through which promising students can be identified and supported.

The result may also encourage greater participation in mathematics and science competitions among younger students. International success often has a wider educational influence, because students who observe their peers achieving at a high level can begin to view advanced academic competition as an attainable objective rather than a distant possibility.

For Sri Lankan families living in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and other countries, the achievement provides an additional reason to celebrate the accomplishments of students in Sri Lanka. It is a reminder that academic excellence remains an important part of the country’s educational identity and that Sri Lankan schoolchildren are capable of contributing confidently to international events.

A Positive Sign for Science and Mathematics Education

The medal tally should be understood within the wider context of student development rather than as an isolated result. The students were selected through several stages, received formal training and were supported in travelling to an international competition where they encountered representatives from 23 countries.

This combination of selection, preparation and participation is instrumental in building academic confidence. It exposes students to different methods of solving problems, introduces them to international standards and provides experience that can contribute to their future studies in fields such as engineering, medicine, information technology, research and education.

The achievement also illustrates the importance of sustained investment in school-level mathematics and science programmes. When competitions are organised systematically and talented students are provided with training and practical support, the country’s young people are given a stronger platform from which to demonstrate their capabilities.

The 13 medals won in West Java are therefore both a commendable result and an encouraging foundation for future participation. The Sri Lankan students have returned home with international recognition, valuable experience and a result that can inspire other young learners to pursue mathematics and science with greater confidence and discipline.
