Archbishop calls to investigate source of Covid-19

It is essential to carry out an investigation to determine as to how the COVID- 19 pandemic came into being, Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said.

Speaking during the midnight Christmas service at St. Sebastian’s Church, Kandana , Cardinal Ranjith said the Pandemic seemed to have not come into the world through natural means but it was something that had come through man’s greed.

“We hear about fraudulent ways of those who produce pharmaceuticals. They also produce germs artificially and then produce medicine to cure the diseases caused by germs. Therefore it is essential to carry out an investigation to determine how COVID- 19 came into existent,” he said.

“We live in a greedy and selfish society. Love and concern for others are forgotten in today’s society. We see how the nature is destroyed and how trees are felled. It is the trees which give us oxygen for us to survive. We might have to carry oxygen containers attached to our bodies soon just like we wear face masks,” he added.

“The lesson which Christmas teaches us is to show love and concern for others. We see certain programmes on TV today and there are songs and dances on the Christmas Day. However everything is over on the following day. This is not Christmas. Real Christmas is showing concern for others as long as we live like Jesus,” he said.
