DESMOND KELLY

ROYAL “She”nanigans – By Des Kelly A clever ruse, carried out for all intents and purposes, simply to lure the general public from the harsh realities of a global pandemic, still very much the focus of this planet called Earth. Social Media are a clever mob.           I watched this interview about the latest “Royal,” Prince Harry, grandson of Queen Elizabeth ‘ll, & Prince Phillip, her Consort/Husband, who married this American Actress Meghan Markle, a Commoner of Asian descent, then produced a male child who was named Archie, and is now expecting their second, a baby girl, later this year.  ...

“CLEAN-COMEDY” – By Des Kelly Something one rarely sees these days. Comedians, both men & women “doing their thing” without swearing. For some unknown reason, they seem to think that using F-words & worse, is going to enhance what is already somewhat stupid, in the stories they  tell, and then they expect their audiences to laugh uproariously, at their morbid sense of humour.  I have often been guilty of fiddling with the remote control of my television, rather late at night, in an effort to find something interesting to watch, but nowadays, to no avail. However, if I do happen to latch onto one of these supposedly comic-shows, watch it for a few minutes, and as soon as I hear a swear-word, I just switch off, say a couple of swear-words myself, and get to bed. I firmly believe that swearing to ...

Phenomenal 2-letter word – By Des Kelly At the best of times, English is a very strange language, indeed. There are not too many languages that have the variety of meanings of one tiny 2 letter word like “UP“, however, here they are, folks, for your personal perusal.           In this day and age, our younger generations do not seem to worry about this International Language, trying their best to abbreviate words a-plenty, using little hand-held devices, but when it comes to the Queen’s English (as it is known), this is a tragedy.  ...

“SPECIAL FAVOURITES” – by Des Kelly    Just for a change, (which is as good as a holiday), I have decided to feature three of my special Sinhala-Song favourites for the many thousands of eLanka members & readers, in the hope that these songs will bring back many precious memories, as music so often does, better than anything else.            The first, is the rendition of Dilhani-Dhuwane’ by Indrani Perera, whose “Cover” of the superb Original Composition of the late, great Clarence Wijewardena moved me so very much when I first heard it, after migrating to Australia in 1962, I decided to write my own “English” version, titled “My Lovely Island Home”, to the tune of this beautiful Sinhalese song. What many of our readers do not know, is that not many years thereafter, Indrani came to Melbourne, to feature in a couple of shows, and ...

FROM ONE SONGWRITER -ANOTHER – By Des Kelly    With all the trouble & strife (& I don’t mean wife), that is going on at the moment, there comes a time when we have to take a break and listen to this very unusual song, written by this very unusual guy, with a glint in his eye.           This was quite possibly his debut on television, nobody seemed to know him, the judges did not have an inkling about the song he was about to sing. ...

“A REMARKABLE STORY” – By Des Kelly     Indeed, one of the most remarkable stories as regards to the British Royal Family, sent in to me by our good friend and eLanka Member Maxwell Gerreyn, so thank you, Max. Whenever we mention the Royal Family, it is generally in reference to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, or maybe Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, Prince Andrew who, incidentally, is the Queen’s favourite son, although he has been giving his family quite a few bad headaches, recently, because of the company he chooses to keep. Then, the conversation may turn to Prince William, 2nd in line to the throne, or Prince Harry, his brother, who now boasts an American wife, Meghan, or the “little Royals” like George & Archie. ...

“SUBJECT OF SUBJUGATION” – by Des Kelly           It was on the fourth day of February,1956, approximately eight years after Ceylon gained her own independence from Britain, that this writer lost his own independence, no easy task, as I remember, getting there.           I was this “Bambalapitiya boy”, who had the audacity to go chasing a beautiful “Dehiwala girl” even though there were so many beautiful girls from my own area, thus causing some friction, to the extent where quite a few “Dehiwala boys” wanted to give me an unmerciful hiding, then throw me out of THEIR area. Did this worry me ??!!,  Of course, it did !, but I still wanted to keep seeing this girl, preferably in one piece, so I then decided to go see a good friend who lived in Waidya Road, not far from where I was ...

“A Twist in Baila”(Style) – By Des Kelly   Something very different, AND very good, in our favourite baila dancing style. Everyone who loves “doing” the baila will undoubtedly love this video, kindly sent to me by a good friend, Elliston, via Stanislaus Kleyn, who obviously loves this type of music & dancing and now wishes to share it around. Thank you, to them both.           A twist in baila however, is ideal only for very experienced baila twist dancers. Personally, while I enjoy the music of the Sri Lankan specialist baila dancing, I cannot dance, to save my soul. I did try my hand at some Tap-dancing many years ago, but had to give it up, after I got very tired and actually fell into the Sink !!.  ...
