DESMOND KELLY

“THE GENTLEMAN’S GAME” -BY Des Kelly As I have always said, and many have agreed with me, cricket is a gentleman’s game. As with any other game, there is always a winner and a loser. Rarely, there is a “draw”. This particular story however, details results of cricketing fantasy involving a team from India, flattened for one of the lowest scores ever, by Australia, coming back to actually beat one of the top cricket teams in the World.  The “come-back” or turn-around of India is what this most interesting story is about.            Please read and enjoy the story, not forgetting that, without a doubt, Australia will return, confident about further good “wins”, wherever they might play, and, so will India, especially after their recent successful tour of the great brown land where kangaroos roam. Desmond Kelly.  (Editor-in-Chief) eLanka. *More than just a ...

“MAN’S BEST FRIEND” – By Des Kelly   A million such stories have been written from time to time, but this one is extraordinary. Touching, and almost unbelievable to read, this “drama” of Frank and Judy HAS to be read however, for everyone to realize how important this “connection” between a man/woman and their pet animals (especially dogs), should be. Show a dog true love folks, and he or she will gladly give their lives for you. Way back when, as a young boy, I did read about another Alsatian male who was shot and killed by his owner who thought his dog had gone into the nursery at home, where his baby was sleeping, to harm the child, only to realize, too late, that a Cobra-Snake had found it’s way into the same nursery, and Rover was sitting by the baby’s cot, teeth bared, and growling, simply telling the ...

You NEVER stop learning, so keep reading good books, and, of course, eLanka, wherever you are. If you CANNOT read, my condolences to you, and here’s hoping that anyone who is a relative or friend of your’s, IS reading this, and will find some time to TEACH YOU !!. Did you know that my message to everyone out there, is to HELP each other in any way possible. Let us start this fine practice right now.           Desmond Kelly.   (Editor-in-Chief)  eLanka. ...

“A ROYAL LOVE-STORY” – by Des Kelly    Just a little bit different, yet interesting to those who do not wish to read all about it. Sent out by Charles Schokman, so thank you Charles.  It is but a few days before the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness Prince Phillip who actually did not want too much fanfare & fuss about his funeral is, once more, getting exactly what he wanted, because of the ravishes of Covid 19 still sweeping across Britain, and so, Royal Protocol as regards funerals, which, under normal conditions, would be huge ceremonial affairs, processions, etc., have now been scaled down, strangely, as this Duke wanted, anyway.   ...

“IT’S MAGIC”-By Des Kelly   “YOU SMILE, THE SONG BEGINS, YOU SPEAK, AND I HEAR VIOLINS,  IT’S MAGIC”, Sang Doris Day, of the good old days, but I am willing to bet that Doris never did get to see “magic” of this magnitude .           I am happy to include this amazing video for all eLanka members, hoping that all of you will enjoy it as much as I did. Also, do enjoy the vocal magic of the late, great Doris Day, one of my favourite female vocalists, who also took her part in some wonderful musical movies of a bygone era.  Desmond Kelly.              “SLOW BOAT TO CHINA” – By Des Kelly     Chris. Lawton O.A.M., (Order of Australia Medal), and ex-Royal Ceylon Navy Officer (O.R.Cy.N), has just sent me, O.A.M., (Ordinary Australian Man), this most interesting, yet accidental account of how (perhaps), Covid 19 came about. Nobody seems to be sure  about this, so instead of taking a plane to this great Land, when Covid permits, I have decided that (hopefully), with the authentic medal winner, Christopher, we could take a slow boat to China, to (perhaps), solve the problem.           Enough said. Thank you Chris Lawton, for something that will help to take our minds off everything that is happening in England at the moment. Seriously, here’s hoping that this Pandemic that still keeps marching along, will ultimately be given the order to HALT !!.            Desmond ...

“MERLE HAGGARD” – By Des Kelly     In addition to the great “post” of my good friend Joe Van Langenberg, who certainly knows his business as both a writer and reviewer of our Show Business personalities World-wide, I do feel that many thousands of eLanka members and readers (World-wide, as well), absolutely love this Country Icon, who died suddenly and sadly  on his 79th birthday.           As far as I am concerned, everyone knows that while I am a Fanatic for good Music of all kinds, my forte’ however, was, and always will be, Country Music, and again, Music of certain eras only. Country Music or Hill-Billy Music, as it was first known, was passable, I suppose, but only because it produced some superb, special instrumentalists who could make their favourite instruments “talk”. The only Vocalist/Songwriter of the 30’s & 40’s who was outstanding in ...

“VALE’ PRINCE PHILIP” – By Des Kelly   Image Source: Vulture He was a Royal Navy Sub- Lieutenant when he first met his own Princess, whose name was Elizabeth. The young couple fell deeply in love, got married, and started their own family. Although he, Philip, was of Royal descent himself, he was originally Prince Philip of Greece, he assumed the name Mountbatten-Windsor, after his wife’s Royal father, King George V1 died, leaving his elder daughter Princess Elizabeth to become Queen Elizabeth the 2nd, with him (Philip) to become her Consort.            This, he did, with great aplomb, always walking one step behind her, his Queen, yet giving her every support, and guiding her through everything that life brings, Royalty, being no exception to the rule. There were good times, there were bad, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, putting it simply, Queen Elizabeth didn’t care, because Philip ...

“THE SENIOR FORCE” – By Des Kelly In Ceylon, and around the World, it was known as the Senior Force. Although, general knowledge gives us our “Armed Forces” as Army, Navy, Air Force, then Police, the fact remains that the NAVY has the title “Senior Force”, & it was from this Force, that the only Military Officer to perish in Easter Sunday carnage, came. I take pride in introducing this story, albeit a sad one, because I too spent many moments of prayer at the Church of St.Anthony, in Kochchikade, the Church that was practically beside H.M.Cy.S. “Gemunu 2”, a land-base, where I was drafted to, during my Service in the Royal Ceylon Navy. I remember having to pass St.Anthony’s Church, both on my way to the Navy Barracks, and again, on my way home, whenever I was “on liberty”, as it was termed, at the time. This particular Church ...

“A DIFFERENT BAILA” -by Des Kelly     This time, Wally Bastiensz had nothing to do with it. The true King of Baila is now no more, so R.I.P. Wally, but here, I am introducing every one of our Lankan/Aussies & Members of the greatest Lankan Website around the  World, (eLanka), to “A Different Baila”, this time, with an “alias” in name & coming from a Tex-Mex group named “The Texas Tornados” to entertain us “Bailando-Style”.You see folks, they now simply take (Baila-and-do) it Mexican style. I have always enjoyed being a Wordsmith, so Bailando is simply just one example of this God-given gift.           In case any of my readers have not experienced the music of this band The Texas Tornados caught my attention recently, and I am quite impressed by their easy style of musicality. The main group was formed by Doug.Sahm, one-time leader of ...
