DESMOND KELLY

“THE ROYAL CEYLON NAVY” – By Des Kelly A most wonderful memory, for a certain Supply Assistant (E635), who served his Country in what was termed “The Senior Force”, firstly under a British Commodore, Paul Chavasse, and later, under Commodore Royce De Mel, who was then promoted to Rear Admiral in 1959.       This writer just happened to be the 635th recruit in the R.Cy.N., joining the Force in 1953, and actually accepted by the R.Cy.N., after my passing-out parade at H.M.Cy.S. Rangalla, in Diyatalawa, after what was easily the toughest training of nearly 4 months, training that turned young teenagers into men.  ...

“THE MAN IN THE HAT” – By Des Kelly   There is NO AUSTRALIAN who depicts this great big brown Island Continent better than him. Slim Dusty, born David Gordon Kirkpatrick in 1927 and sadly passing on, in 2003, at 76 years of age, Slim Dusty, fondly known as “The man in the hat”, was the very epitome of Australia, as I saw him. He married Joy McKean in 1951, and she bore him two children, Anne & David.            Like most Country Music Stars, Slim did not have an easy life, to begin with. The son of a Cattle Farmer, he had his work on the farm cut out for him, and in addition, being musically minded, perhaps because of his father who was an amateur musician nicknamed “Noisy Dan”, he started to learn to play an old acoustic guitar, and at about 10 years ...

CHRISTMAS IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS IN CEYLON – by Noel Cruz (Introduction by Des Kelly) Memories, memories. This was written by the Star of the Music, Art & Drama Society of St.Peter’s College, Bambalpitiya, the Rev.Fr. Noel Crusz, who left the Priesthood when he found the celibacy laws were too much for him. I knew Noel Crusz very well, as I joined the “Society”immediately on starting my education there. Noel was a very intelligent guy, full of different ideas about Music, Art & Drama, and it certainly looks like he loved to write as well.           I hope that the readers of eLanka and especially the old Peterites, enjoy this little account of what Christmas was like in the good old days.           Desmond Kelly.          (Editor-in- Chief)  eLanka.    CHRISTMAS IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS IN CEYLON ...

“SANTA CLAUS EXPLAINED” – By Des Kelly  It is not too far away now.  Christmas eve is only two weeks away, and the jolly fat man will soon be climbing down chimneys everywhere. Toys for both boys & girls who have been good will find their way into waiting arms. Too soon, he has come and gone and although the children look forward to his next visit, they know very little about him.            This will help you children to get to know Santa a bit better. Please read this interesting piece. Better still, ask your parents to tell you all about this jolly old man. Happy Christmas to all you boys and girls and don’t forget to be good during next year, too.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)  eLanka. The Jon S. “FIRST DOWN, AGAIN” – by Des Kelly    Video Source: abc 07.47. (7/12/2020) touchdown,  Monday morning, you guessed it. The first International flight into Melbourne, coming from Colombo, Sri Lanka has made it safely, now to face the new, much tougher entry requirements that will be required of both the Airline crew and the passengers, quarantined under very strict conditions, overseen, this time, by ADF (Australian Defence Force) Personnel, as it should have been, in the first place, anyway.         First down, again, since June 2020, and it really does not matter where in the World they come from, visitors could well be carrying the dreaded Covid bug (without even knowing it), and Victoria Australia, of all places, is certainly not going to make the same mistakes they made initially, leading to the toughest restrictions in Australia, in an effort to eradicate C.V,19., this one, too little, it ...

Ladies & Gentlemen, here she is, with an ode to a “bug” that we would all like to smash underfoot. I give you Pam Ayers.           Desmond Kelly.          (Editor-in-Chief) eLanka.     Pam Ayers Ode to Corona Virus   I’m normally a social girl I love to meet my mates But lately with the virus here We can’t go out the gates. You see, we are the ‘oldies’ now We need to stay inside If they haven’t seen us for a while They’ll think we’ve upped and died, They’ll never know the things we did Before we got this old There wasn’t ...

“CRICKET, LOVELY CRICKET” – By Des Kelly      Now that “The Gentlemen’s game” is back on the agenda again, and although they are not the primary feature this time, my “Calypso de Windies” was written & composed by me, many years ago, in tribute to the West Indian Cricket team, who had just beaten Australia and came over  to Ceylon, to play just one exhibition game in Colombo.       I was in the Royal Ceylon Navy, at the time, stationed at H.M,Cy.S. Gemunu, our major Land-base in Colombo, and being quite keen to see the great West Indians in action, but not keen enough to stand in a queue about two miles long, in front of the Times Newspaper Office, Colombo, in Uniform, I decided to go back to Barracks and write this tribute to the team, went back to discuss it with the Manager of the ...

“WADAKAHA SUDIYA” (THE DRINK) – By Des Kelly    There have been many versions of this song, recorded originally in Sri Lanka, the most popular being undoubtedly the Wally Bastiensz version which was sung in Sinhalese, as expected. The tempo in which the song was recorded was of course Wally’s favourite, being the “Baila”           For those of you who do not know what Baila is, it was a type of party music first brought into what was then Ceylon, by the Portuguese who invaded the little Island, then being ruled by Sinhalese Kings, in 1630. That was about 306 years before I was born, so let’s make that another story. ...

“MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC” – by Des Kelly   This is another special song that has just been recorded in America. After the 20th of January, 2021, it is sure to become a “Hit Parade” item around the World, but I am happy for all eLanka members to experience a preview of it. It amazed me, because I was unaware that either of these two gentlemen could sing, but then, as the other song says, “You never can tell”.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)  eLanka. Want to buy the song You Never Can Tell for 3 bucks?… Less than the cost of a cuppa?? Click here or below to download the song on eLanka Shop ...
