2012 Cricket@Killara – Match Report by Dinesh “move over Harsha Bogle” De Silva

By Shehan Wijetilaka and Dinesh De Silva in Cricket@Killara ·

Cricket @ Killara 2012 was an event to remember….. Shehan and Mano had put together yet another enjoyable afternoon for friends and family. It was a fab show and the glorious weather could not have been any better for an Autumn day.

This year, we were back at Killara Park. Not just on the side wicket but on the main turf. Conditions for batting and bowling were perfect.

For me, this year will be more remembered as the year when the “kids” of yesteryear, who once were dragged along with to the event by their parents had now taken centre stage. They were the stars, at the cricket and also socially. It was delightful to watch the young boys and girls, some of them now young men and women, all of them handsome enjoying every part of the event. Shehan and Mano, well done.

The cricket was fab too…

Masters v Classics were first up…As usual it was a competitive affair with Captains Neil & Suresh marshalling their troops (pardon the pun being ANZAC day) as though it was a test match. Masters took first lease of the wicket and put on 65 after some good batting with Father & Son duo of Neil (20) & Keiren (17) scoring the majority of runs and Praha (Batsman of the year 2010) making 12. Avinash, Milinda and Rohan also troubled the scorers, making contributions. Duke and Pri batted but it was a case of Donald Duck and not luck this time in 2012.

Classics had some early scares with the 3 important wickets of Josh , Indy & Upul falling early, until Suresh dressed in a “retired ballerina” outfit (as per Prem) (33) Duleep (19) came together to seal a well earned victory. Retired Ballerina comment was a classic with further comments clarifying between Sehehan and Mil if it was in fact retired not retarded?

Game 2, Legends v Classics, was a low scoring affairs with Classics batting 1st getting a below par total of 55 thanks to superb bowling from all the Legends particularly Darren, Ashane , Johnthan. Despite cricketing heavyweights Upul, Duleep, Richie, & Suresh supported by young stars in Amil and Anesh (Killara greenies), Josh . batting looked weak. However it was their best batsman Indy who compiled a solid 15 to leave the classics with a total to bowl at.

The Legends superbly captained by Gima, won this game fairly easily with a 40 run partnership by Prem and Dinesh. The last last 8 runs became the toughest to get however when the Legends lost 3 wickets in quick succession. Shehan and Johnathan doing the needful though to get the Legends aross the line with a steady hand.

The third game was now crucial…. A Legends win would assure them the coveted Corn Beef Trophy…. Much to play for and on the other hand a win by the Masters would mean a 4th game and play-off.

Masters batted first, and were restricted to 46 with some Shaaaaa!!!! Supeeeeerb bowling!!!! From the youngsters Darren, Ashane, Johnathan…. with Shehan and Prem also rolling their “re”-tired arms over… Neil top scored again with 15 for the Masters with Keiren with the next best score of 9. When it was the Legends turn to bat… the youngsters made easy meat of the Masters… Darren(11) , Johnathan(12*) and Ashane(17*) notching up the runs in 7 overs for the fall of 1 wicket. Masters bowling was lead by the falmbouyant MC Duke , with Rohan being the main wicker taker..

2012 Winners of the Corned Beef Trophy – Legends Captained by Gima

Players : Gima, Prem, Shehan, Dinesh, Darren,Ashane, Johnathan, Rehan.. (in order of Age)

The games were played in excellent spirit. With everyone getting an opportunity to star! Emerging stars Avinash, Josh , Rehan…all did extremely well opening the batting and bowling for their respective teams.

Play of the Day

Suresh M / Priya C

Big shot is played and an opportunity for a wicket for the Classis… their captain Suresh is circling under the bowl for what looked like an eternity to get a much needed wicket. Turning round and round, yes just like a retired ballerina!! Picture the tights and baggy shorts and tight t’shirt.. the ball is still in the air suddenly Suresh does what looks like a triple spin… misses the ball completely and the ball and Suresh hit the ground in perfect synchronicity with a huge thud…

the thud is heard in Pymble . everyone is just packing themselves laughing …… J

In all this confusion.. a more alert fielder notices an opportunity for a wicket nevertheless and darts the ball to the keeper…. A prancing Pri Cooray is runout at the other end…..

What a ball!!! Whoever bowled it! …

Catch of the Day

Darren J

Richie gets a half tracker and has a mighty swing….. Darren dives acrobatically on the boundary ropes and takes a catch at full stretch… … Magnificient!

Shot of the Day

Neil J, pull shot for 4….

There were many good 4 ‘s and 6’s. But Neil’s pull shot for 4 to start his innings off had Viv Richards written all over it… WOW!

Dress of the Day

Suresh , Ballerina outfilt…

Recruit of the day

Milinda K was recruited by Northern Force talent scouts…. to play for the highly regarded, premiership winning Team

Shehan & Mano, thank you again for a superb event.

Congratulations to all the ladies who had ut together a FABULOUS spread….
