A new academic partnership between Goldsmiths, University of London and BCAS Campus is set to broaden access to internationally recognised higher education in Sri Lanka, allowing local students to pursue selected Goldsmiths undergraduate degrees without relocating overseas.

The partnership, reported by Faraz Shauketaly of Financial Chronicle on 29 August 2026, represents Goldsmiths’ first academic partnership in Sri Lanka and establishes a formal validation arrangement between the two institutions. Under this model, BCAS will deliver the programmes locally, while Goldsmiths will retain responsibility for academic standards, quality assurance and the awarding of degrees.

The first intake is expected to commence in September 2026, with programmes initially covering business, computing, psychology and law.

The arrangement has been structured as a validation partnership rather than a simple branding or promotional association. BCAS will provide teaching and student support in Sri Lanka, while Goldsmiths will oversee the academic framework through which the programmes are delivered and assessed.

This distinction is important because the academic responsibility remains with Goldsmiths. The University will retain oversight of academic standards and quality assurance, while degrees completed through the approved programmes will be awarded by Goldsmiths, University of London.

According to the reported details, the partnership passed through Goldsmiths’ institutional governance processes, including scrutiny by its Academic Board. Such oversight is intended to ensure that the programmes delivered at BCAS remain aligned with the academic requirements established by the University.

For students and families, the arrangement offers a more accessible route to a British university qualification, while allowing students to remain in Sri Lanka during their studies. It also gives BCAS the opportunity to deliver programmes supported by the academic systems and quality requirements of an established United Kingdom institution.

Four areas of study for the first intake

The initial programmes will be offered in four broad areas: business, computing, psychology and law. These subjects encompass several fields that are increasingly relevant to professional development, digital transformation, organisational management and the study of human behaviour and institutions.

Business education can provide students with a foundation in management, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing and organisational practice. Computing programmes, meanwhile, can support the development of technical knowledge in a sector where digital skills are becoming increasingly important across almost every industry.

Psychology introduces students to the systematic study of human behaviour, cognition and mental processes, while law provides an academic foundation for understanding legal principles, institutions and the relationship between individuals and society.

The selection of these fields reflects the student demand and professional relevance identified in the partnership announcement. However, individual programme structures, entry requirements, fees and progression routes will need to be confirmed directly through BCAS and Goldsmiths before applications are made.

The locally delivered format may also allow students to manage their education in a setting closer to their families and communities. While the total cost of study will depend on programme fees and personal circumstances, remaining in Sri Lanka could reduce the need for overseas accommodation, international travel and living expenses associated with studying in the United Kingdom.

Leadership from both institutions

The agreement brings together senior representatives from BCAS and Goldsmiths.

BCAS is represented by Rajendra Theagarajah, Chairman of BCAS, and Teresh Amaratunga, Chief Executive. The agreement was formally signed with Professor David Oswell, Goldsmiths’ Interim Vice-Chancellor, representing the London institution.

The partnership marks another stage in the development of BCAS, which was established in 1999 and has expanded its academic presence across several parts of Sri Lanka. The institution operates campuses in Colombo, Kandy, Kalmunai and Jaffna, giving the partnership a geographical reach beyond the capital.

This multi-campus presence could be particularly significant for students who face practical difficulties in travelling to Colombo or pursuing education outside their home districts. The availability of programmes across different locations may support wider participation, although the precise delivery arrangements for each Goldsmiths programme will be determined by the institutions.

For Goldsmiths, the agreement forms part of a wider international strategy focused on developing carefully selected transnational education partnerships. The University’s involvement provides an established academic framework, while BCAS contributes its local infrastructure and experience in delivering higher-education programmes in Sri Lanka.

Goldsmiths’ long academic history

Goldsmiths traces its origins to 1891 and became a member institution of the University of London in 1904, as reported in connection with the partnership.

Over time, Goldsmiths has developed an academic profile associated with the arts, humanities, social sciences, computing and creative disciplines. Its entry into Sri Lanka through a formal academic partnership therefore creates a new connection between the University’s historic academic identity and BCAS’s established local presence.

The partnership also demonstrates how higher education is increasingly being delivered through international arrangements in which a university’s academic standards are combined with the facilities and student services of a partner institution in another country.

Such arrangements require transparency. Prospective students will need clear information about the institution responsible for teaching, the university responsible for quality assurance, the awarding body, the programme duration, assessment requirements and any applicable professional recognition.

The Goldsmiths–BCAS model is significant precisely because the responsibilities of the two institutions have been identified: BCAS will deliver the undergraduate programmes, while Goldsmiths will retain academic oversight and award the degrees.

Supporting skills development in Sri Lanka

The partnership arrives at a time when students are seeking education that combines academic credibility with practical accessibility. A programme delivered in Sri Lanka but linked to a United Kingdom university may offer students exposure to an international academic framework while they remain connected to their local environment.

The value of the arrangement will ultimately depend on the quality of teaching, the strength of student support, the availability of suitable learning resources and the consistency of academic standards. It will also depend on how effectively students are supported in developing research, communication, analytical and technical capabilities alongside subject knowledge.

For BCAS, the collaboration creates an opportunity to strengthen its portfolio of internationally connected programmes. For Goldsmiths, it establishes a formal presence in Sri Lanka through a partner with campuses in several important locations.

For students, the central consideration will be whether the programmes provide a rigorous and well-supported educational experience leading to a recognised Goldsmiths award. The published structure of the partnership indicates that academic oversight remains a core responsibility of Goldsmiths, which provides an important point of clarity for prospective applicants.

Information about the partnership is available through the BCAS Goldsmiths programme page, while Goldsmiths has published its own account of the academic partnership with BCAS Campus. Families in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and other countries may also follow further Sri Lankan education developments through eLanka’s news and articles section.

A new opportunity for students and institutions

The first Goldsmiths–BCAS intake, expected in September 2026, will provide an important early test of the partnership’s ability to combine international academic oversight with effective local delivery.

If implemented with clarity, consistency and strong student support, the arrangement could widen access to British higher education for Sri Lankan students who may prefer to begin their studies at home. It also creates a platform for future academic collaboration, provided that the same attention is maintained in relation to quality assurance, curriculum delivery and transparent communication.

The partnership therefore represents a positive development in Sri Lanka’s higher-education sector: internationally connected, locally delivered and centred on the development of academic and professional skills.
