The incredible Church Cave of Zabbaleens in Cairo
The Monastery of St. Simon, also known as the Cave Church, is located in the Mokattam mountain in the southeast of Cairo, Egypt, in an area that is known as “garbage city” because of the large population of garbage collectors Zabbaleens.

The history of the temple is intertwined with the history of this people who lived a long time as a nomad being expelled from one place to another.
The Zabbaleens are descendants of farmers who began to migrate from Upper Egypt to Cairo in the 1940s because of prolonged periods of bad harvests and extreme poverty. They decided to go to the city in search of work and ended up in makeshift settlements around the city. Initially, they kept themselves stuck in the tradition of raising pigs, goats, chickens and other animals, but eventually found that the collection and sorting of waste produced by city dwellers were more profitable.
Zabbaleens classify household waste, recovering and selling valuables, while the organic waste provides an excellent source of food for their animals. In fact, this arrangement worked so well that the successive waves of migrants came from Upper Egypt to live and work in the newly founded villages garbage in Cairo.
For years, the slums of Zabbaleens were moved from side to side around the city trying to prevent the municipal authorities. Finally, a large group decided to settle near the cliffs of the Mokattam quarries on the eastern edge of the city, which is now the largest community of garbage collectors of Cairo, with about 30,000 residents.
Egypt is a Muslim country, but at least 90% of Zabbaleens are Coptic Christians. Christian communities are rare to find in Egypt, so they prefer to stay in Mokattam within their own religious community, although many of them can afford homes elsewhere.
The Coptic Church site Mokattam village was established in 1975. After the establishment of the church, the Zabbaleens felt more secure in his position, and only then began to use more permanent building materials such as stone and brick, to their homes.
Given their previous experience of Giza dump in 1970, Zabbaleens lived in temporary tin huts. In 1976, a major fire in Manshīyat Nasir, led to the start of construction of the first church under the Mokattam mountain in a place of 1,000 square meters. Several other churches were built in caves found in Mokattam, one of which is the Monastery of St. Simon, with a capacity of 20,000 people. In fact, the Church’s Mokattam Cave is the Middle East’s largest church.
