Kebellena Cave Temple – A Hidden Gem of Sri Lanka’s Spiritual Heritage-by Kalani-eLanka

Kebellena Cave Temple-eLanka

Nestled amidst the scenic landscapes of Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa Province lies Kebellena Cave Temple, a lesser-known yet culturally significant Buddhist site. Located in the Kegalle District, this ancient temple offers a peaceful retreat for pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike. Though not as famous as Dambulla or Aluvihara, Kebellena Cave Temple is a treasure trove of ancient art, rock inscriptions, and natural beauty.

Historical Background

Kebellena Cave Temple dates back over 2,000 years, believed to have been established during the Anuradhapura period. Like many cave temples in Sri Lanka, it was used by Buddhist monks for meditation and religious practice. The temple features several drip-ledged caves, known locally as katarama, which were carved to protect monks from rainwater while meditating.

Architecture and Features

The temple complex includes:

  • Rock Caves with Ancient Inscriptions – Some caves bear Brahmi script inscriptions, providing clues about the era and patrons who supported the monastic community.

  • Statues and Murals – Inside the main cave shrine, visitors can find statues of the Buddha in meditative and reclining postures, along with faded but impressive murals that reflect early Buddhist art.

  • Bo Tree and Stupa – A sacred Bo tree (Ficus religiosa) and a small stupa are located near the temple premises, contributing to the spiritual atmosphere.

Natural Surroundings

One of the most striking features of Kebellena Cave Temple is its serene natural setting. The temple is surrounded by lush forest, rocky cliffs, and a peaceful ambiance, ideal for meditation and reflection. Wildlife, birds, and the soft sound of the wind add to the temple’s charm.

Religious Importance

Though relatively quiet compared to other pilgrimage sites, Kebellena is still actively used by local monks and devotees. It becomes a hub of religious activity during Poya days and Buddhist festivals, where rituals and offerings are performed.

Getting There

Kebellena Cave Temple is located near Rambukkana in the Kegalle District, about 80 km from Colombo. It is accessible via the main Kandy-Colombo road. The final stretch may require a short hike through nature trails, adding to the adventure.

Preservation and Challenges

The temple remains undisturbed and rustic, but it faces challenges such as erosion, neglect, and lack of tourism awareness. Efforts by the local community and Department of Archaeology aim to preserve its cultural heritage.
