LCC MEDIA RELEASE – Councillor Ali Karnib listed on NSW Multicultural Honour Roll

Liverpool City Council has welcomed the inclusion of the late Councillor Ali Karnib on the NSW Multicultural Honour Roll, recognising his lifelong contribution to multicultural harmony, community leadership, and public service.

Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun said the recognition was a privilege for the city and a fitting acknowledgment of Ali Karnib’s lifelong service.

“It is a great honour for the City of Liverpool to have Councillor Ali Karnib recognised on the NSW Multicultural Honour Roll. This recognition demonstrates the respect held across the state for his contribution to multicultural harmony and community unity,” Mayor Mannoun said.

The NSW Multicultural Honour Roll is a permanent public record acknowledging individuals whose legacy has made a lasting impact on social cohesion across New South Wales. Councillor Karnib’s inclusion is a significant honour for his family and for the City of Liverpool, reflecting the statewide regard for his dedication to building inclusive and connected communities.

Elected to Liverpool City Council in 1999, Ali Karnib served the community for more than 20 years until his retirement in 2024, including three terms as Deputy Mayor. A former teacher who settled in Liverpool in 1984, he was a strong advocate for equity, education, and social cohesion.

Ali also served as President of the Lebanese Community Council, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening cross‑cultural understanding and fostering connections between communities across Liverpool and wider New South Wales.

During his time on Council, Ali served on numerous committees including the Civic Advisory Committee, Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee, Budget Review Panel, and the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Committee. His contribution touched almost every area of Council’s work, from planning and economic development to youth engagement and community wellbeing.

“Ali Karnib brought people together and championed our diverse communities. Liverpool is a stronger and more inclusive city because of his leadership,” Mayor Mannoun said.

Ali Karnib’s legacy continues through his son, Councillor Sam Karnib, who was elected to Council in the same year his father retired.

“I felt extremely proud and privileged to be elected by the people of Liverpool to follow my father onto Council, in the city he loved and served for more than two decades,” Councillor Sam Karnib said.

“Our family is deeply honoured that our father, and my mentor, has been recognised on the NSW Multicultural Honour Roll. This acknowledgment reflects the values he stood for throughout his life: service, humility and a deep belief in bringing people together.”
