“MEMORIES” by Des Kelly

“MEMORIES” by Des Kelly

Too much cannot be written about my “subject” for eLanka, this week. Frequently, “they” come into my writings, and, just as frequently, they will come into the minds of everyone, no matter who they are, no matter, where they live, no matter, if they can read this, or they cannot. Actually, no matter WHAT!.

I now speak (or write), about persons, such as myself, who have been lucky enough to live a long life, in the context of time, those who have experienced life, the good and the bad times, when they were happy or sad, to be brief, those who have “lived life”.

Youngsters have no time for “memories”. They live in a “time”when they have no “time” for such things, but, there is nothing more certain. There will come a “time” (hopefully), when they, too, will have recourse to this unique “word”.

“Memories are made of this”, sang Dino Martino, with a glass of anything, except “‘water,” in his hand. Written by three people, Terry Gilkyson, Richard Dehr, & Frank Miller in 1955, it became a smash “hit” for Dean, which simply goes to show what an important “word” this is, in the English language. It took THREE people to write that song.

There are possibly dozens of songs about “memories”

As a matter of fact, this writer penned one, as well, called “Memories, that haunt me”, & believe me, readers of eLanka,

speaking literally, “they” still do. I have lived a life with many “hauntings” including, one of which being about when I, myself, was mistaken for a “ghost”in a little cemetery in Suburban Ceylon, in the middle of the night, but that is another story.

Now, here is something else, that is most important. Unfortunately, we hear the word “dementia”, occurring quite

frequently, in our lives today. It is a very “sad” word. There is no pain involved in this sickness, just a complete loss of memory. However, the first “mistress” in my life, was, is, & always be, “Music”, and the reason I bring this “possible remedy” into this story, is that “MUSIC” seems to be the ONLY thing to bring back memories (even temporarily), to people suffering dementia. I did write another article for eLanka, many moons ago, titled “Entertainers, Extraordinaire” which proves what I say about music.

Anyone who is “up to date” on technology is invited to “google” the title, under my name, to read about two superb Australians, one of whom, suffered dementia. It is a sad, but true story, & one I may even bring back with my new concept for eLanka, where a “music-clip” is attached to the story. I have to “stress” here, that neither eLanka or myself have anything to gain, financially, by this “concept”, as a matter of fact, “those” involved in my “clips” are the only ones advantaged, with the “publicity” eLanka gives them gratis, , no matter how old these “clips” are.

Finally, “memories”, no matter how infrequent, are precious.Everyone will have “them”at one time or another.

Look after them & guard them, because they belong to YOU.
