Our Journey to Nuwara Eliya, embarking from Kandy – By Dr Harold Gunatillake

Dr Harold Gunatillake

Embark on a breathtaking journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, where rolling tea estates shimmer under The morning sun, waterfalls cascade gracefully, and the misty mountain ranges Paint a dreamy backdrop.

Along the way, tea pluckers expertly gather nature’s finest leaves. In contrast, charming tea factories, cosy retreats, and enticing eateries invite travellers to pause, savour, and soak in the magic of Sri Lanka’s highlands.”

Hello viewers, I am sharing my inspiring and relaxing holiday trip to Nuwara Eliya from Kandy.

On Sinhala & Tamil New Year Day, our journey began in Kandy, where we happily paused at the charming Tea Bush in Ramboda for a lovely lunch. After that, we eagerly continued to Nuwara Eliya to enjoy a wonderful day and evening filled with the magical moments that come with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

We savoured a lovely lunch at the Tea Bush, where they treated us to an excellent buffet that varied daily. It’s a popular pause for travellers, from holidaymakers to locals, looking for a warm cup, a tasty meal, or a chance to rest and freshen up. This charming spot is a gem for everyone going to the hills.

A few peaceful moments on the bustling balcony while gazing at the distant Kotmale dam bring a lovely sense of calm before continuing our adventure. Parents can relax as their kids explore the spacious and safe area at the Tea Bush.

The Ramboda climate is simply delightful—often wrapped in a gentle mist, calm, and breezy—which creates the perfect ambience for couples wanting to enjoy a cosy overnight stay before heading to their beautiful hill country resorts.

After enjoying a lovely break at the Tea Bush, you’ll find that driving through the longest tunnel in Sri Lanka is quite an exciting adventure! The Ramboda Road Tunnel, the longest tunnel in the country, is located along the A5 highway (Perandenyia – Nuwara Eliya Road) near Ramboda as you make your way up the beautiful hills.

Ramboda Falls is a delightful stop that boasts a charming array of new boutiques and eateries! Many families love to take a refreshing dip in the falls, especially among the scattered rocks, and it’s a relatively safe spot for the little ones to enjoy.

Ramboda Falls, a breathtaking gem in Sri Lanka, is the eleventh-tallest waterfall in the country and ranks 729th in the world. Nestled in the picturesque Ramboda area along the scenic A5 highway at Ramboda Pass, this stunning waterfall is formed by the lovely Panna Oya, a tributary of the Kothmale Oya.

The waterfall features a fantastic drop of around 109 meters, putting on a stunning display of sparkling water and soft mist. As you go to Ramboda Falls, you’ll be greeted by lovely views and lush greenery, making it a cherished spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

As we journey through the beautiful Ramboda, we have the delight of navigating the seven charming hairpin bends of the main road leading us into the hills.

We finally arrive at the summit after a scenic half-hour drive along winding roads through lush tea estates that resemble green wavy carpets. From there, we gently descend to the stunning Nuwara Eliya district.

Nuwara Eliya is a charming mountain resort town nestled in the beautiful hill country of Sri Lanka. It’s famous for its refreshing cool climate and sprawling tea plantations that stretch as far as the eye can see. Embarking from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is a delightful experience as you climb the hills and enjoy a

picturesque landscape that welcomes you into a cooler, more temperate environment.

The magical moment unfolds as evening falls, filled with cheerful families cherishing their time together. The roads come alive with bustling vehicles closely lined up, making our journey of just a mile or two take about an hour!

After a delightful day in Nuwara Eliya, we drove to Tea Bush for a cosy night’s rest.

The next morning greeted us with a sumptuous breakfast, and we happily returned to Kandy by afternoon.

It seems we had the charming destination of Nuwara Eliya mostly to ourselves, as the busy season of eager tourists was winding down just a bit until things pick up again soon in August.

I love to share this experience with you.
